OK, has anyone ever used these tubes in an amp? I have only used 12AX7's. I was helping my father clean out his garage, and being the pack rat he his (never picked up a guitar), he somehow ended up with boxes upon boxes of these. All RCA, old Red white and black boxes. Any experience with these? (There were about 20 AX7's as well)

Au7's work great in tube based pedals and the AT7's work well for reverb from what I've found.

12AU7s only have a gain of 17 compared to 44 for an AY7, 66 for an AT7 and 100 for an AX7. I know they actually vary but this is ballpark info. You can see that an AU7 would be really low gain and getting the most clean out of an amp. The problem is they seem to be more likely to howl than other types. Due to the low gain they are also not in much demand.
