Okay, got home from my business trip with my new #5 in tow . . . .
plugged into my 1x12 close cab Green back that I have in the house with my SG J. It sounded good but not great . . . . volume was low, I had the break lite SA on 4 to protect the speaker . . . it was okay
On Friday night my son Michael invited me to play guitar for his youth group praise band (we have VBS coming up next week so we going to do some Rush of Fools songs). I brought up the Therapy and plugged it into my Avatar 2x12 loaded with a pair of Vintage 30's. No effects, just my favorite cable (Maxxx XP made by Patty) and fired it up. Ahhhhh, much better. I used my Parker Nite Fly and dialed in the bridge humbucker, factory pups. Nice and punchy and I was able to dial in some very smooth OD that sounded real nice in parts of the songs. I like the fact that I can control the OD by my pick attack. I can back off on the verses and then dig in during the choruses. Very cool feature!
The first song we worked on was Lay it Down so I needed a lighter drive sound and was able to dial in something very useful will little fuss. The second song required more saturation turned up the volume, rolled down the MV and perfect control of the volume and got the OD I wanted. I like this OD alot because even with humbuckers it gets saturated but not supper aggresive sounding. Like it alot.
So, after rehersal I asked Michael if he wanted to check it out. He has adopted my SGJ (by the way, the Zebra pups that come stock in the SGJ sound amazing with his Mini Z). He plugged into the Therapy and played a few things and I started dialing in knobs. When he played something heavy, I cranked the volume and got saturation, when he played Sweet Home Alabama (Shannon and Jason, he playes it really well and thanks to you two its still one of his favorite songs) I clean it up and got some sparkle going. It was bit harsh in the top end so I swapped speaker cabs to my 2X12 loaded with vintage G12-65's and the harshness went away! Sounded really good with those speakers.
Since Patty was in the room I decided to dime everything on the amp and LET IT ROAR!!! It was glorious, even at that it wasn't too over the top. Nice saturated tube distortion but articuation was still there and it didn't sound like it was farting. It was fun. I noticed Patty shaking her head so I turned it back down. Editorial comment: Patty is a sound tech by trade so I felt obligated as a guitarist to turn the amp up to an obnoxious level just for her!
I'll be running a couple of pedals tomorrow night so we'll see how that goes and how it changes the tones.
I really like this amp!
Questions or something you'd like me to try for you? Just let me know, I'll break out my Tele during the week . . . .
