Greetings All,
I'm a regular over at TGP posting here for the first time. Don't currently own a Z (played many, but never owned one), but I'm looking HARD at the Therapy - so... I thought I'd say "Hello" to all of you in the Therapy section. BTW, I'm here at MarkT's Kind invitation following our dialogue at TGP.
The Therapy is one of several amps I'm looking at right now to compliment my Top Hat Super Deluxe 'Americana' (think Big, clean, Blackface). Other amps I'm looking at (in no particular order) are:
Carol Ann Satin
Fryette Aether
Longhorn El Patron
Swart ST-45 Convertible
Schroeder DB9
Dual 6L6 output stage is the common denominator among them - some are higher gain than others, one is even 2-channel. All have a number of qualities I really like. Presently, I'll confess to leaning more closely to the Therapy than the others because 1) It appears to deliver as much gain as I would want, and 2) I tend to favor single-channel amps with a few simple controls.
I'd like to ask a few questions of the Therapy cognoscenti, if I may. For the record, after 35 years of playing, I've basically decided that I'm a Strat guy - having sold most of my other types of guitars. So I'm most interested in how the Therapy responds with single-coils. Also, I'm a Blues / Bluesy Rock Player (I know... who isn't?!?)
First, how would you guys describe the character of the Therapy's OD when turned up? What I'm looking for is more smooth and creamy versus crunchy.
Second, have any of you tried speakers other than Celestions with your Therapy? Over the years, I've admittedly developed something of a love/hate relationship with Celestions. I would be really interested in trying a couple of my favorite American-made speakers with this amp (Austin Speaker Works Crossroads and Elegante, and Scumback M55 PVC, H75-LHDC, and Scumnico PVC.
Third, several of the other amps have on-board reverb units. That certainly isn't a deal-breaker for me, as I have an excellent outboard reverb in my rack. But it would seem that at least having the option of onboard reverb might make the Therapy the (dare I say it?) perfect amp. Cathode-biased amps tend to sound fairly "wet" anyway, so it may not be missed on the Therapy. Anyone wish it were there?
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my rambling I'm enjoying following the discussions of those of you who own (or have played) the Therapy. I'm currently awaiting the sale of a MotorAve Motovox I have on consignment before purchasing whichever of these amps I eventually select, so I still have a little time for research.
Best to all, and thanks again to MarkT for the kind invitation to join the discussions here.
