I'm sure this has been covered before. But after my 'big gun' amp shootout last weekend, it confirms that the 'ray is a little brighter than most.
I've got standard output tele pickups, and I've got my cut/tone both at about 10 o'clock. I'm considering moving the cut even lower. I know I'm supposed to take my own advice and turn them with my eyes closed, but whenever I get TOO far away from straight up, I feel like I'm going to be operating the amp away from where it was designed to be used.
Where do you folks set them?

I set my cut at right around 10:00 and my tone at just shy of 2:00. Sometimes the tone control is a little less but never below 1:00. That's with a Z 2x12 w/blues. With a z 2x10 cab I tend to experiment more depending on the room.
edit: I should add that when I'm using the Ray I generally can't set the volume past 9:00. When that's the case I also use an RC Booster and have it on almost all the time. I set the gain on the pedal at around 10:00, the treble control at 11:00 and the bass control in the center detente position. Volume is just a tad past unity. That helps tame the highs just a bit. If any other drive pedal is used I generally keep the tone controls set so no additional treble is added. The amp is bright enough as it is but I find that as you turn it up the low end is more balanced. Sure does feel good when you get the chance to play this amp loud.

Where do you folks set them? When I had mine, I ran everything right around 4 on the knob (about 11:00). If I turned the volume down some, I turned the cut down too or if I turned the tone up, the cut went up too. I know what you mean (in your quote above)... I do the same thing. I feel if I have, for instance, the treble turned down around 9:00 that I'm not doing something right or missing out on something.... I think it's just my OCD. I currently have a "non Z" amp that has a TON of low end with the bass set at noon.....I'm having a really hard time taking the bass knob off noon, even though I KNOW it sounds better on about 9:30. I'm sure my sound man will remind me of how much bass I have this weekend when I try it live.

I usually keep the cut at 9:00 or slightly below, tone from 1:00-2:00 and volume around noon.

Tone between noon and 1, depending on the guitar I'm using and the room.
Cut to taste.

I usually have my tone set to 1 or 2 o'clock depending on the room. Cut is usually 10 o'clock. I'm playing a pine tele parts guitar I built. Has Voodoo TE50 bridge pickup, and JR Kohler copper saddles. It's a beefy sounding tele. Sounds great with the Ray.

When I had one I remember running it one of two ways. I usually set the tone around noon, with tone there the volume and cut seemed to follow each other. Anywhere from 9-noon on both controls.
I also remember setting the cut at around 9:00 and the turning up the tone to the point where the low end filled in nicely, around 10:30, the setting the volume to need.
These were usually with alnico speakers though.

Now that I have some gigs with the 'ray under my belt, I find I do the following: Strike a chord and turn the tone know until the bass start to kick in...usually around 10:00. That's truly the deciding factor with me. The amp has such firm bass, that it's easy to overpower. I'll continue to experiment with the cut, but for now, it's around 9-10.

I've been breaking in my new Ray with gold spk. and so far I'm in the same ball park. Tone around 1:00 with my crook. Tone any where from 12-2:00 with my other guitars. Cut seems to my hears to hit a sweet spot at 9:00-10:00. Volume to taste but kinda follows Cut. I'm loving this amp. Got my Z-verb this week and digging it with the Ray! Working now with my brake lite to try and dial it in.

Now that I have plenty of hours on my 1x12 Gold...I have found I like the Cut around 3, Tone at 4.5, and brake on 1.

In my Maz Sr it's 11 o'clock cut with my 2 x 12 Golds. I use DS Five-Two pups on my Tele.
