I love all the tones SRV got, so I was wondering what Z amp or amps would he have used?

Yup, I'd say EZG-50 also--it's like the King Kong of American-sounding amps. And maybe with an Eminence Legend 151 in the speaker cab. I've heard some way impressive sounds from that speaker on YooToob lately... very SRV.

I believe that is Doc's 4x10. I added a few other clips also to give you more flavor..

The EZG is a great and obvious choice but...
He'd REALLY love the KT45. It's got pretty much the best neck and "notch" Strat tones ever. I've never heard that aspect of it shown in a YouTube clip.
Of course now that we've got the Therapy he'd love that one too.

Here's the answer: Ah 4x10 Jensen Speakers in that cab, explains a lot now.

Old thread. Just wandering through Z-Talk ... at 4 a.m. :-)
A very long standing friend of mine owns one of the 3 or 4 largest commercial sound companies in the U.S. He's also a well-known studio guitar player. He's known as having golden ears and extremely clean power when he does live sound. Has mixed some of the biggest acts in the world.
Cutting a long story short, he used to do sound for SRV right at the time Stevie got his D*mble SSS. My friend told me about the first sound check he did when Stevie was playing through the SSS. My fried said he was 20+ rows back in the hall, getting ready to do the sound check, and SRV plugged into the SSS ... and started playing. Amp wasn't even mic'd through the P.A. yet.
He said the amp was so loud, it actually hit him in the chest before it was even going through the P.A. Said the SSS was far and away the loudest, cleanest, biggest sounding amp he ever heard - by a country mile. Stevie was using a bunch of amps (including his Marhsall Major), but my friend said the SSS was off-the-hook.
It was an interesting story, as my friend did the live sound (his gear, his FOH mix) on the original King Crimson world reunion tour in 1980, did live sound for Journey in their hey day, etc., etc.
I saw Stevie live a couple times. He was using the SSS, Marshall Major, two Super Reverbs and two Vibroverbs. That's about 550 watts ... that's a lot of juice.
His basic tone was Fender BF through EVs, fronted by a Tube Screamer. But the reality is that he was using usually 4 - 6 different amps simultaneously. Or at leat that's the info I got from the guy actually mixing him.

You are welcome - I just realized I made a zillion typos in my post. Guess I shouldn't be writing lengthy posts at 4 a.m.

The Z lux would be a great choice. I also find the Maz18 can be very convincing .. It's kind of like a fender meets marshall in one amp. Killer! You can get an idea of how it sounds here.

Nice playing, as usual, Kris.
I think you need large bottles to get closer to Stevie's tone(s), and a bit less high end IMHO. Even in Doc's amps, I don't think the girth is there from EL84s (and nobody gets girth from a 4xEL84 platform like Doc can).
The couple times I saw Stevie live, his sound was immense. And live, he was just sheer power and timing - like a freight train leading 100 boxcars down the track.
Even in the studio - especially for In Step - he was using multiple amps simultaneously. Although, I am not sure as to whether or not on Texas Flood he was using only JB's Dumble, or was also using Fenders.
If you watch the El Macambo vid, he's simply using a couple Fenders. It really took Cesar Diaz to get Stevie's tone together, though.
Easiest/simplest way to get close to SRV's tone? Get a black face SR and do what Stevie did. Run your hands over all the controls so they are dimed. Load the cab with EV speakers (stock is fine too). Front it with a TS9 and grab a Strat.
Bang - you're 90% of the way there (re: tone).

I saw him at a club before he hit it big and he was just using the Super Reverb/Vibroverb setup. I think I remember there were two of each but I'm not sure. I saw him a couple of times later at big venues (one outdoors) when he was using the multiple amp rigs. He had pretty much the same sound all three times. It struck me as being clean and huge. Like he had ALL of the frequencies covered. I don't know any other way to describe it.
It makes me wonder how a couple of Surgical Steel rigs would sound. One with a 15 and another with 4x10's. Cranked!! Just a thought.
