I think the Z28 is probably is my favorite Dr. Z amp. Love the clean and the grind. The 6V6 is one of favorite tubes but I also like 5881's. Anyone ever try 5881 in a Z28? I know the heater requirements are about twice as much as 6V6 and maybe the doctor will shoot the idea down. An interested mind wants to know.

Did,
Why mess with what many of us consider to be the 28's 6V6 perfection?
Instead, maybe try retubing one of the bigger ef 86 front-end Z amps (the KT45 comes to mind); I don't know the technical stuff, though.
Just saying.

Valid point. I have resolve my issue by getting another Z28. That could help my clean output.

Did,
Full disclosure requires that I inform you that my Route66 used to belong to smolder.

I had a Rt 66. I acquired it after first getting a Z28. The clean didn't have the same character of the Z28. The 66 didn't have the headroom and that could have been the phase inverter. I traded it a for a second Z28 and some cash. You are right the Z28 is one of the best 6V6 amps around.

I personally prefer the KT to the 66, and if you want clean headroom, the KT has it in spades and your stomps almost sound like they're built into the amp. One of my favorite uses is to run one of my archtops into the KT and then into a 2x12 cab w/ Vin 30s; it yields a rich and complex jazz tone.
