Stumbled across this video today from Royer w Ross Hogarth.
Good bits on mic placement. On the right is a whole bunch of other Royer videos and a lot of them are helpful electric guitar recording tips.

Love me some ribbons. Since discovering ribbon mics I rarely use more than one mic on a guitar cabinet. They are figure 8 by design so the back side picks up the room. You can balance them just by how close you put them to the amp (closer more direct, further away more room) If the room gets to be too much you can put a go-bo or something like a packing blanket draped over another amp behind the mic. that will sort of cut off the room even more.

I've been looking at ribbons for awhile now. I'd love a Royer 121 but that's out of my budget at the moment. I know there's only one Royer, but are there any cheaper alternatives that can somewhat come close to the R121?

The R-101 is $400 less than the 121 and it's a great mic. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/R101Also the AT 4081 is mighty good sounding ribbon. When I got one I put it up right next to my 121 and the 2 of them were super close in sound. Also the AT is an active ribbon so it's happier with lower gain mic pre-amps. Highly recommended www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT4081 at $700 Both of these really out perform the Chinese mics in the sub $500 class

Cool! I'd love the Royer but that AT has my attention now!
This is off the recording subject a little but since we're on mics - I've noticed that Royer has the Live version of the R121 that's supposed to be more robust, etc. So are people using these in live settings? I would think the figure 8 pattern wouldn't fair well in live settings. Although I have seen Brad Paisley using what looks to be some sort of Shure ribbon on stage.
Is it worth it to spend $$$ on a ribbon for live use vs the standard dynamics? Personal preference I guess. I'm not a huge fan of the sm57 but I can't ignore it's popularity either. Especially after hearing the 57 and R121 compared to each other - it made me want to get a 121 for live use, albeit a little excessive!
If this is too off topic let me know and just make a new thread!

The R-101 is the more 'live' version that Royer makes. Unless you are touring with a PA company on larger stages I wouldn't go for a ribbon on stage. Some guys who use ribbons live (like Tom Petty & Mike Campbel) use the Reflexion Filter things to block of the back side of the mic. So much easier to put up a dynamic and quickly dial in a sound.

That was my thoughts as well. So to open up a whole other debate - are there dynamics out there that exhibit some of the ribbon qualities? I find most dynamics to be just too fizzy (the sm57 anyways) for my taste. I'm assuming that's the 4k peak he's referring to.

I've been looking at ribbon mics here lately. There's a lot of options out there. I'm pretty much leaning toward the AT4081. I will get one in the next few months. I've also looking at the Cascade Fathead for a starter mic.

Larger diaphragm dynamics can be a little darker, like the EV RE-20 or the Sennheiser 409. It's easier to just move the microphone away from the center of the cone if you find the sound too 'fizzy'
Cascade Fathead's are some of the best of the chinese mics. If you get a Fathead it's really worth it to go for the Lundahl transformer upgrade

I use the Fathead with the Lundahl transformer all the time on my home recordings. It really sounds great. No experience with anything else to compare it to in the ribbon realm, though.
I really like it on my guitar cabs, and even on my acoustic sometimes.
