As some of you know I'll be buying a z-28 next month. I'm curious to know what kind of dirt pedals you guys use with it. For reference I play mostly country (cover gigs in Nashville) and "alt-country" (think old 97s/drive by truckers) for my original stuff. I play single coil teles exclusively now. Might get a strat with a bucker in the bridge at some point but that's another thread, lol. I think I have my country low-gain OD covered. My current rig is: Barber Compact Tone Press> EP Booster > barber gain changer > Wampler Delay > verb/trem TBD >RC Booster. I JUST got the EP Booster so I'm still playing with settings and where it will go in the chain. Right now I'm leaving it on all the time along with my comp for a really nice and warm clean sound. I kick on the Gain Changer for low gain crunch type rhythm stuff and kick on the RC booster for solos. I really want to add one more OD pedal, more of a medium-gain overdrive for so I don't have to turn knobs on the gain changer between songs to get more gain. I was just wondering what Med-Gain ODs you guys are using with the Z-28? Here's a few I've been thinking about: Timmy Nobles ODR-1 Emerson EM-Drive BB Preamp Barber Direct Drive Maybe something from Catalinbread like the SFT or the tweed-inspired pedal they make Wampler Euphoria (almost bought this one today) Maybe another tweedish pedal My other thing is this, being that the Z-28 is only a 22 watt amp, maybe my current rig will be able to push it hard enough to get medium gain. The pedal HAS to be transparent. I really want the character of my Nash Tele and the Dr Z to come through. They are such quality products and I don't want to cover up their natural sounds or color them drastically. Just wondering what you guys that have owned and gigged this amp would recommend, let me know! Thanks. Gary. Gary's Gear Reviews www.youtube.com/channel/UC788DWuTN8xI8eDsUjCINHA

I'm thinking Timmy should cover it. You can also swap chips if you want a different feel.

I don't have a Z-28. But for OD I've used with success a Timmy, Barber Small Fry, Barber Direct Drive (which if you're interested I'll let go for $50 + shipping) and a MI Audio Tube Zone. The Timmy and the two Barbers got along really well with both my RT66 and my Maz 18. Haven't really used them with the Ghia. My smaller board used the MI Audio with the Ghia in church. I also use the Barber Launch Pad as a clean boost with great success to push the front end.

In the past I've run with BB Pre and AC Boost; Diamond J Drive; CMAT Signa Drive; and both Flying Dragon and Draconis from Lizard Leg .... all of worked nice - primarily with an EBMM Axis Super Sport and/or PRS SC-245 .... with 112 and/or 210 Z cabs ..... and once or twice with a Z-best. Most of the pedals left the board and the guitars are probably gonna rotate back to my collection someday soon I kept both of my Flying Dragons and my Draconis .... but if'n I were to re-acquire a pedal or two ... I'd look for the BB and the J-DRive. cheers always, eh Joel

I use a Z28 and can echo what Joey said about the Signa Drive. Love it. It's very transparent in the middle toggle position. It does medium and lite gain really well. It will always be on my board. Another, in a similar vein, is the Mojohand Rook. It seems a little darker than the Signa, but is still very transparent in the middle toggle position. I use it as a low gain/boost drive, but sounds great at medium gain as well.

I'd consider a King of Tone, or the Barber Compact Direct Drive, which does a pretty good imatation of the KoT's right side.

I've been using a Visual Sound VS-XO that works well for low/mid gain applications.

Lots of good ideas. My guitar teacher has a King Of Tone and he loves it. I looooove my Gain Changer, how different is it from the Direct Drive? I think on of the EQ settings on the gain changer is modeled after it. The VX-XO looks awesome too. I think I'm getting a sex drive to replace my RC Booster. Any of you guys use this pedal with Zs?

The Compact Direct Drive's middle gain settings sit are similar to the highest gain settings on the GC. The DD is a bit more open, the GC is a bit tighter. The DD has a bit more of its own color, the GC is one of the most transparent drives on the market in the LTD-SR setting. Dave Barber says the GC is more of an American sound, the DD more British.

My old FD2 sounds great, as does my Fulltone Fat Boost 3. But together they sound awesome. That being said, I WANT WANT WANT a Wampler Euphoria.
To echo others, 3-3-3 and you you really don't need anything. But my Z28 is loud, I don't have a Brake lite and 333 isn't always feasible. More often its not sadly.

Another option is to open up the tone controls on the '28 (past noon for both B &T)and set the volume to the room. You'll find ample gain on tap and as you dial the GV up any boost (read EP, FD3, badgerPre, etc) will goose it into thickness. I've found that more than useful for times when I don't want to bring a board along and want some hair on the sound. Usually the V ends up around 10-11 oclock and I can still hear the rest of the band when I'm not wide open on my guitar.

Maybe check out the lovepedal od11? Its a great clear and open od... And check out OKKO Diablo (not the plus version) and Menatone red snapper. All of them are very nice pedals!

I've owned two Z28's over the years and really liked any of the TS-9 based pedals. They always matched up well with the amp's natural OD My two cents, Todd

I use a Mesa flux drive for the med gain. I team it with an RC booster or an EHx Soul food for driving the base amp for clean lead stuff or the flux drive for gain leads. These go into an earth Quaker dispatch master for some ambience.
Works well with both strat and LP

Its the only Timmy i could find in my country (Belgium). So I gave up on that and found a pedal I wanted for a while now... The Wampler plextortion... Ok its a little bit heavier and nothing like the Timmy, but it sounds sweet on the Z28! Gain max at 12 o'clock. I'm in love... I'm becomming a huge Wampler fan! For my lower gain OD ill probably gonna end up with a JHS morning glory.
