I ran sound for a band yesterday evening. For FOH they had a pair of Electro-Voice ELX 115p speakers for tops and a pair of ELX 118p's for subs. All of the cabinets are powered. We were outdoors at a local nightclub. I was amazed at how loud yet clean these were. Very smooth sounding with no annoying peaks and yet great definition. The x-overs are in the subs and and they feed the tops which have switchable HP filters. There was no EQ for the FOH other than what was on the mixer channels which I thought might be a problem but EV has engineered the system to be very flat so my normal EQ settings worked fine.
I have heard other powered speakers before from most of the major brands (Yamaha, QSC, and JBL) but these sound the best to me. I actually like them better than even JBL's PRX series. This was my first opportunity to run sound with powered cabinets and, as I expected, setup was simple. I used my board which is an Allen & Heath Mix Wizard and Shure SM-87's on vocals. There were lots of positive comments from the band and also from the customers about how full the band sounded without blowing out peoples ears.
I'm not sure I'm ready for powered cabinets yet though because I like the versatility of individual components and the ability to 'work around' in case something fails (and I already own the equipment). But for a band where no one is really an engineer and things need to be loud, yet simple, I can see where this is the way to go. With these EV's, everything considered, it's probably cheaper too.
