My guitar teacher and I both have a Mini-Z. We are both Billy Gibbons fans and we both really like the tone of the Mini when cranked. We both play live with a Maz 18 or 38, depending on the venue.
He has a theory that a Carmen Ghia would sound like a big Mini if cranked, live on stage. I told him that I had used one once at a blues jam and it was cleaner than my Maz 18. Of course, I had no idea how to set it up and did not change the host's setup.
Is his theory correct?

There are a lot of variables that go into your tone. The Mini has an 8 or 10 inch speaker and single EL84 tube I believe. The Ghia can have a 1x10, 2x10, 4x10, 1x12, 2x12 or 4x12 speaker configuration. The choice of speaker brands and models affect the tone as well. The Ghia is very sensitive to different tubes and simply changing any one of the tubes can alter the sound of the Ghia. That is why Ghia;s are so cool to experiment with different speakers and tubes to find a sound you like.
The Ghia is way louder than the Mini Z so if you are basing it on volume alone, yes the Ghia is the big brother to the Mini Z.
You can find a used Ghia head for around $700 if you get a deal. You can compare the 2 amps side by side. You will love the Ghia.

The Ghia is not normally cleaner than a Maz Jr. It can be set up that way, but the Ghia starts to break up a bit earlier than the Maz.

I don't think they are really too similar. When playing either side-by-side at lower volumes, there may be some similarities, but in a band setting, they will be different, imo. There is too much difference under the hood between them. Pre and power amp sections are different. The Ghia is going to have a smoother breakup and just more "authority" in a live setting.

Both are their own entities.

I think of the Ghia like a Neil Young tone .... Monza has the ZZ ....

I asked this question a few years ago & was directed to the Maz Jr NR.
Same thing though, they're both different animals that do their own things.
Maybe a Monza? Or a stack of Minis (That'd be cool!)?
