Hey guys,
I managed to rent a Royer 121 and an API A2D mic preamp. Some really great sounds when I'm tracking guitar! The Royer and a Shure sm57 is a deadly combo. Doesn't require a whole lot of EQ I find. Just wondering, has anyone compared the Shure KSM 313 to the Royer 121? I'm looking at getting a nice ribbon for tracking guitar and I have no way of renting a Shure KSM 313. The KSM 313 appears to have a flatter response than the royer. I'm not sure if I'd like that more or less...
Any suggestions or advice?
Cheers! Kris

Sure bought out a very cool company called Crowley and Tripp who were making ribbon mics a few years ago. They are very good microphones.
I haven't used one but I own several Royer mics and they are great. the Royer 121 is less than the Sure and it along with the Coles 4038 are probably the 2 most popular modern ribbon mics.
The 121 is pretty much the standard ribbon on electric guitar. I also have the AT 4081. When I got it we set it up next to the Royer 121 at the studio and couldn't believe how close the 2 sounded. The AT is an 'active' mic so it works with a lot more pre-amps, having the extra gain. Either one would work great with your API's.
One of the unique qualities of the Royers is that the ribbon, by design, is not placed exactly in the center of the body of the microphone. The back is slightly brighter so you have the option of turning the mic around for a different response.

I own and use the Royer R121. Its the champ as its useful in so many other places as well. 121 with SM7B is KILLER, also Shure SM57 Beta with the 121 kills. Acoustic guitar I used 121 with a mid 90's AKG C414 BULS and was blown away. Same incredible rsults with 121 and a RODE K2 or another ribbon; the ARA R84. My point? See how many times I incorporate the 121? Its a go to mic. Its smooth characteristic can tame the hyped digital sound of today. Ribbon mics are coming back into favor for this reason I think. Good luck and HAPPY HUNTING, its all fun no matter what!!!! ps - NEVER trade or sell a mic. Just build your collection. Horses for courses as they say You'll always find an application for even your seemingly cheapest one. The 313 seems to get very good reviews and I am also interested. Sorry, long winded and almost non relevant reply to your question. GAH! M
