Hey all, Just picked up my first Dr. Z and I have a question regarding the break in of the G12H30. The amp sounds pretty "boxy" and "ice picky" even with the treble down at about 9 and the cut at about 10. I assume this is a break in issue?? The demo I played at Chicago Music Exchange for an hour just blew me away with my Tom Anderson Cobra S that I brought in to demo amps. The sound left me less then excited when I plugged her in for the first time in my studio. Thoughts? I'm coming from a Bogner Shiva EL34 and a Fender Supersonic 22 with WGS Retro 30 previously. Any help will be most appreciated! Thanks! Mitch www.learnguitarchicago.com

Drive it a little harder and experiment. Don't try to transpose settings you are used to with other amps. Just turn them till you find the tones. Triode is a tiny bit darker.

Yes, and also Mike (doctorice)has some Maz settings you may want to peruse. Z amps in General have unique tone control, like Roscoe said listen to your ears. I have the blue and it was very shrill to my ears till I tamed her. Or my ears adjusted.... Lol
Congrats on a fine amp and welcome.

I was a fender amp user and it took me a while to get used to the Maz tone settings. I took pictures of other Maz users amps and played around with their settings until I found my own.
The destination is worth the journey!

I think you will hear a big difference after you get a few hours on the speaker. I lean into them pretty good after the first gentle half hour , FWIW.

Thanks All! I appreciate the welcome and the suggestions. She definitely opened up a bit today after a couple of hours but clearly needs some more time.

Hey mavin00 I made some clips a while back that sort of show you the differences you can get from the Pentode/Triode and the EQ bypass with some different guitars. You might get something out of it. Here you go. ericambel.com/gear/dr-z-maz-8-w-audio-clips/I'm originally from Batavia btw.

Found some Doctorice setting pdf's recommended by Roscoe. Looking forward to checking these out. Welcome. Definitely needs to have the speaker broken in. On the MAZ 8, I generally run the Bass much higher than I do on the MAZ 18. As has been said, let your ears be your guide. Close your eyes and play with the dials! Let me know if you need the latest version of the sheet. Send me a private message (PM) with your email, and I'll email it to you.

Hey. Picked up a new Maz 8 from the great folks at Chicago Music Exchange (thanks Alex!) 2 weeks ago. Spent a ton of time tweaking the eq and I'm not sure if its the amp or the speaker I'm not digging. I'm primarily a hum bucker player and use my pedals (Timmy, KOT) for od/distortion. I had a Fender Supersonic 22 with WGS Retro 30 which I just sold to one of my guitar students. Prior to that I had a long love affair with a Bogner Shiva El34.
I don't really gig out anymore and primarily use my amp in my home studio where I teach guitar full-time and session work. I wanted to go to a single channel lo watt amp. I'm thinking a possible speaker swap (stock G12H30 70th anniversary Celestion)? Return it and try a Two Rock Studio 22?
Anyone else have had this dilemma? I really want to love this amp but so far meh....
Thanks! Mitch

Being a single output tube amp the master works much differently than what you are used to.

Just came back from CME. Big mea culpa! Alex had the amp singing. He showed me what I was doing wrong, actually felt bad we didn't go over the nuances of the amp itself. I had the master way too low. I needed the master up and control the volume basically with the volume control. My bad! I see a Brake Lite in my near future....Loud m'fer with the master volume at 2 o'clock Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

My pleasure. Basically the Volume controls the pre-amp tube gain and the Master is the gain for the output tube.

Glad it's working for you now. Brake Lite works great, and don't forget to try triode mode. That knocks the power down a bit. It's also an amp that really responds to guitar knobs. I set it up for a base tone I like and then use the guitar to shade the clean vs. OD and the tone.

The G12H in my new MAZ8 Studio Combo sounded harsh in the treble range. The Celestion website has a "how to break-in a guitar speaker" page. They recommend playing clean tones through a new speaker with the amp's master volume control up full, as well as bass and mid up all the way. In my small studio, this would be painfully loud. Instead, I laid the amp on its back, using a thick book to leave a gap between the amp and the floor. Then I piled several layers of acoustic foam on top. Then I played a reggae recording (reggae's got clean bass lines - I could have used jazz as well) through the amp with master at 100% and volume at about 2 o'clock. After 30 minutes of this, the speaker sounded substantially different. The harshness was gone. Treble sounded sweeter. I immediately moved the Cut knob from 9 o'clock to noon. I hope this is helpful.

The book I grabbed was "Dune" (hardcover) and the album was John Brown's Body "Among Them". You're right, details are important.
