Even though Humbucker Music did a great job of getting my Antidote shipped out to me promptly I have to say it has been an impatient wait! It shipped last Thurs and I tracked it like, every 10 mins missed the delivery yesterday and just picked it up from the UPS facility in Kazoo on my lunch break. Anyway I'm counting the mins trying to think up some BS reason to cut out of work early ! I want to give another shout out to Jaguarguy for inviting me out to his place to jam on his Z's which lead me to choose that Antidote. I also want to give a shout out to my boy Enuggles who got me into Z's in the 1st place and getting me on the forum and also just being a great friend... I'll be hanging out with Enuggles this weekend in Chi putting the Antidote through its paces. Pics and report to come...

Bummer, but it happens. We've all had to come to grips with an amp we think is really cool not really being best for our needs (it's not you, it's me! I swear!) I hope you find found something even better for your needs leinad!

Sent from my SGH-T999 using proboards I tried explaining that to my bud but he didn't have much time. Humbucker music only gives you five days. I wanted him to try it through my Z best like he did at Mikes. He played it through his 5e3 kit combo speaker. He thought it was a good amp just too loud. I really wish he had more time to try it through other cabs. He mentioned he doesn't think it would have made much difference though. That a different cab/speaker wouldn't have changed the characteristics of the antidote. We disagreed on that one... I hope he chimes in here to explain his opinions further. We're still getting together this weekend minus the antidote... I'm still going to insist he try other perhaps lower powered Z options.

Bummer, but things don't alway work out. It would've been ideal if he could've tried it put through less efficient speakers. I was concerned that my Remedy would be way too loud, but with a Green Beret/Reaper 55 speaker combo, I find it's much more manageable than my Maz jr through a 2x10.

Hey all,
My pursuit continues... I returned the Antidote today...
I definitely think the Antidote is a killer amp but I think I was fooling myself a bit thinking that it would suit my situation. It was super loud and I was even using a Z Break Lite with it. I was able to get it to a suitable volume but I think the Z Break soaked up quite a bit of the tone at that level. The Z break at 2 was about as loud as my situation could tolerate. It's true that I was playing it through a single 12" speaker and I'm sure that it could have been better matched to the amp. I was playing it through a Weber 12A125S which i think is a great speaker. It is a speaker tailored to the tweed style amp but by the same token the Anitidote is a node to the early Bassman and JTM 45 so I don't really think its too off the mark...
I have to say that in comparison to my 5e3 clone, while at a usable volume, I preferred the tone and character of the 5e3 over the Antidote. I was pleasantly surprised by this since I built the 5e3. Obviously at 18ish watts I'm able to get the 5e3 cooking at a much more reasonable volume than what it would take for the Antidote to do the same. In the end I had to make the choice to go with the one that sounded the best at the volume level where I would use it most so I kept the 5e3.
I still want to send out thanks and respect for everyone here who answered my questions and to Mike for letting me come out for a test drive! Very cool, welcoming, and helpful bunch of people here!
Methinks I'll be more down to earth as I look for another amp. The Monza or the Gia are high on the list. I also really like the Maz 18. We'll see...
Thanks All!!!
Dan

The sound in our head does not always match what comes into our ears. The situation you play in affects the tones you need to sound right. I often find, when playing in a 4 piece band, the tone that is killer in the basement playing alone will not work with the band. I love fuzz pedals, have had a lot over the years, but I can't seem to make them work with the band. Too thick, too thin, too loud, not loud enough... endless permutations of not sounding right. One night it's great, then back to crap. I find that when I listen to the jams and performances we have recorded over the years that I have sounded good even when I was not sure when we were playing. However, when I think I sound good, I play better and that makes the difference to me. If you can't get comfortable with a piece of gear put it up for sale and move on. Tone is a journey, not a destination, at least not one you can stay long term.

I usually at least try to give it due diligence by recording it, playing it thorough different cabs, test different pedals... What's the shortest time you guys have had an amp? Days, hours, minutes?

The antidote is a serious amp not that the other Z's I have owned were/are not serious amps. There was a reason why the Dr said it would require "big boy pants". It took me some time to "learn" the amp and how to handle it. Once you get it down you can really appreciate all of the characteristics.
I can see it being hard to handle as a first Z amp. Z watts are a different thing that take time to build up to. Not saying you are not up to the task or do not know gear. But a Lower wattage Z is a great place to start or a MV Z.

With all due respect, I can't think of a worse speaker for the muscular Antidote than a Weber 12A125S. I also think the Antidote and a 5E3 circuit should not be mentioned in the same sentence..... 12 loose watts vs 45 stiff Z watts.... And another thing, I thought you tried one at Mike's house and loved it?...That's why you ordered one. Don't mean to ruffle any feathers....just my take on this thread. Sorry it didn't work...

While of course I can't speak for Dan. He originally played my V1 Mazerati some time ago and dug it very much. Held off a while then played a Maz 18 in a local guitar shop by him and was totally floored. He really started talking about them more with me. I of course always talked them up from the get go. Mike graciously offered to have him out to try some more amps. He was set on a Remedy with master volume which I thought was a great choice. Called me later that day and said the Antidote was the one for sure. Placed an order not too long after that. I asked if he was ordering a cab and he said he'd buy one used down the road a piece. He said in the meantime he'd play through his 5e3 cab. I thought that was a bad idea. Now knowing it's a speaker rated for 20 or 30 watts, really not a good idea. I wanted him to come here (Chicago) and play that beast through my ZBest. It would have been glorious. Humbucker only gives you five days to decide on your new gear. That's too short imho but I can imagine if you buy something like the Antidote you've done your homework. We've been going back and forth about this for the last two days. He's probably sick of hearing it from me. He's told me to chill out several times... It's all in good gear fun. Dan's a good guy and I think he just realized it was too much amp for him. This was his first experience with a boutique amp. Fwiw. Did it get a fair chance going through that Weber, obviously not but that's what he had at the time. I think he's caught Z fever and I'm sure will be looking to get into another one soon.

For me the time varies, I'm usually pretty sure the piece of gear I buy sounds really good. The problem I have is I love sounds. All sounds to me can be used, just need a forum, or hole to fill with it. I love records from the '60's and '70's for the sounds and production values. It isn't easy to get them into the mix when I play. Eventually I get a little frustrated and part out the gear. Usually give it a good thrashing for several months at least.
