i'm surprised to see so many people liking the SS rectifier with the KT-45. unless your able to really get the KT-45 into the sweetspot (sans Air Brake), i think the SS rectifier makes the amp sound a little steely and cold. i sure don't have the type of situation where i can run the KT-45 full out without an Air Brake, and to my ears the tube rectifier gives the amp more life and responsiveness at lower volumes. The SS recto does give the KT a more "steely" sound- but that's what I'm looking for. I love that "hammer hitting an anvil" sound when I hit the low "E" ala SRV at the end of "Pride and Joy". Not that I'm trying to be an SRV imitator, but I do love an ultra tight low end and fast transient response. I also love my "softer" Z amps; it's just whatever I'm in the mood for. When I want that sound, nothing does it better than the SS KT45. From what I've read, some of the many amp mods SRV had done to his Fenders include 5751's in V1, disconnecting the vibrato, EV speakers, thicker baffle boards, and solid state rectifiers. Of course he then ran the amps real loudly. He also used a 150W Dumble Steel String Singer which was kind of like a steel guitar amp. All that adds up to what some folks would call a "hard" sound. I think SRV would have loved the KT45. The tube rectified KT still has a tight low end, and great transient response. If I had to live with the tube recto forever I'd still love it. BTW I think Buddy W. used to (and maybe still does) run a SS recto in his MAZ 38.....

One other quick question, Phil. Are you sure it's necessary to re-bias after installing a SS rectifier? I know that's not necessary when changing between tube rectifiers. I realize it would probably be a good idea, but it is because of the voltage drop you mentioned earlier with tubes, that isn't present with SS?
Thanks, bs

Spoken like a true gentleman. I still have about 10 bottles of Havana Club from back when I was still flying international. Perhaps we should crack one of those babies open? Myles, Thanks a ton.
