Gotta give some love to the Z28. You rarely hear folks talk about it these days. It's all "Remedy this" and "Antidote that". Those are great amps too, but the fact that there are newer Z amps does not diminish the Z28's luster. Doc once told me that the Z28 was his favorite Z amp. That may have changed since then but the fact remains that it's a very versatile, world-class amp with a TON of tone. You can cover Fender to Marshall in a pretty seamless manner with that little beast. It's got the perfect power supply stiffness to give a fantastic low end tightness even with 6V6's. I think I'll go plug into mine tonight.

Z28 was my first Z love too.
I've owned two of them and keep getting caught in the grass is greener thing.
There are many great Z amps, this is certainly one of them!

Yes, I'm about to sell two of my four Zs (I like them, but it's the old "too much stuff" thing).
Suffice to say my 28 1x10 combo will not be one of them.

Of My Three Z's the '28 is always my go to amp. I know the Maz 18 has it's gifts as well as the Remedy, but 3 knobs with either a 1x12 or a 2x10 through a BrakeLite if needed is what MY Doctor has ordered. Of course, maybe it's the valance!

Ooh, I bet the 1x12 plus the 2x10 would sound really righteous together; I know my 1x10 combo together with my 1x12 Mesa enclosure sounds pretty good to me. The amp seems to sound particularly good when more air is getting moved.

Great amp. I had one as well and also had a Remedy at the time and ended up staying with the Remedy. No doubt about it a very warm and fat sounding amp. Nice cleans and a fat warm overdrive.

Great amp. Simple, not but reasonably priced, and delivers the tone big time. Surprisingly versatile for a three-knobber, too--works great as a clean platform or as a straight-in overdriven dirt monster on 3/3/3, and that's no jive!

Thanks Eric for putting together a clip of the Z28. I wonder why it didn't get a demo clip from the Dr. if it is/was his favorite? Seems like it is one of his most origional designs.
I think it gets respect, just look at the thread count. But to your point it never seems to get the love on the Facebook page. I cannot recall see it on any of the multi amp pics. That pic of all the blackout amps was killer but no 28. Maybe the Dr. wants it that way, one to somewhat fly under the radar.

Phil, it is still my favorite. I just built one for Buddy Whittington to take with him to Europe , I know he will dig it.

Stellar amp--so simple but so full of tone it's ridiculous. I have one of Todd's "grass is greener" ones, but I don't think I'll ever let go of it. This thing could slay so many other amps.

LOTS of Z28 love here!! I may be gigging my Remedy, and raving about it all over the place, but the Z28 is STILL my desert island amp.... I booted her up at the gig on Sunday, and had a little play at sound check....... GLORIOUS!!

Get ready for an increase in sales of the Z28 if Buddy is going on tour with one. It will be a secret no longer. Certainly sold me my Maz Jr. just as sure l will be sold on the Z 28. Been considering another Z,you all warned me it would happen,to go with an unused 2x12 cab anyway .

Z Plus it will fit in the overhead storage on the plane! I know.

Just an FYI for travel:
I got a hard ATA case from Gator a couple of months ago that fits the 28 (and 66 and KT and the rest of the heads that size) like it was made for them.
BUT, probably won't fit in the overhead on a plane.

Not to ruffle too many feathers...but what about the Ghia?

I brought my 220v Ghia home for a little Maple Heights TLC, it has been bumped around on buses and planes and stored over the winter in dark, dank, damp places I dare not think about too much for what must be 10 years now until the last 4 or 5 years when I finally found a good affordable resting place for it. Just brought the chassis, left the head shell and the screws in the BIG A$$ XCase I bought for it off ebay years ago. The CASE is TWICE as big as the AMP! ANYWAY, Doc and I started talking a little more headroom and just a skosh more watts and before you know it I had seen the light! I also have ol' standby MAZ 38 at the ready, so THANKS AGAIN Doc, you have sure made it easier, well actually made it POSSIBLE for me to have my own amp overseas every night, which is a rarity in the world of fonky a$$ computer-grade backline appliances.

I think it's my favorite of the Z's I've owned too (and I've owned a few of 'em).
For me, my ears, and what I want from an amp I think it's the most well rounded of the ones I've played through. That's not to say it's the most versatile, but it just works for me tonally whether I'm using pedals, going straight in, doing a cover band gig, or something jazzy or country flavored. It's an overused cliche but it is hard to get a bad sound out of the thing. Works well at a range of volumes and with a variety of guitars too.

Not to ruffle too many feathers...but what about the Ghia? (you may now proceed with the verbal abuse) not a darn thing wrong with a Ghia, John! GREAT amp........ but if you want a Ghia with more head room, more girth and a few more Watts, you got yourself a Z28!

Well I may a little late to this thread but I still have my Z-28. I have several of the Doc's fine amps and they were great. I love 6v6 tubes and Fender DR is one of my favorite amps but the Z-28 can handle anything that gets put in front of it. It continually brings a smile to my face. Well done Dr. Z!
