I should probably think about getting some spare 6v6's for my Z28...what 6v6 are you guys using? Looking for new tube suggestions...not NOS.

I'm using an old Amperex and an old Zenith. I know it sounds retarded to mix and match but I couldn't resist.... Also, if you want to go with new tubes the EH 6V6's are really a decent tube as well.

I've only got one amp that uses 6v6 tubes & in it is an EH 6v6. Not bad for a new production tube.

The Tung Sol Reissues are the only new 6V6 I carry and I can carry ANYTHING. I only chose items with proven track records and avoid items that have a high percentage of "blow ups" in peoples amps. I'm in constant contact with about 20 techs around the country and collect data from them.
In NOS, the Marconi 6V6Gs and Sylvania 6V6GTYs are favorites.

EH 6V6 or Tungsol reissues are at the top closely followed by JJ's . My Carr Slant V6's are equipped with EH's but in an email from Steve Carr he say's they are now using the Tungsol's as well and that he really likes them . All I can say is thank god the tube mfg's finally got it right with the 6V6 and a lot of the other tubes in the last few years with improvements to continue i'm sure .

I just tried JJ's in my 28 last night and decided I liked the stock tubes a little better. The JJ's were not as woody sounding to me, but they were a little clearer. Let us know what you think about the Tung Sol's I'm really interested in those. Jason

My Z28 had the stock Eh's in it, one of them developed a rattle, so i started looking at replacements. I as well found them to be a little harsh in the mids/ upper mids. I ended up getting a pair of the Brimar 6V6 gty black glass ones from mike (kca) and a pair of the Marconi G's (coke bottle shape). I initially put the brimars in and found them to be a definate improvement !! Rich, slightly aggressive mids, but NO harshness, and a smooth bright top that gets creamy when cranked. In fairness to the EH's, i did find that the Bias had drifted way high for a 6v6 for some unknown reason, and probably was contributing to the to the harshness. Still sittin on the marconi's !

I'm going to do an A-B test comparing the original equipment EH's to the Tungsol 6V6's in my 2 Carr Slant V6's and will report back in a few days . I'm also going to try a few NOS GZ34's as well and maybe some preamps . Word is the Tungsol breaks up smoother and is better for blues style....we will see . I'll probably try some JJ's as well just for the sake of knowing . I'm sure at some point I'll try a few things with the MAZ18 and I'm wondering if the tranny's will handle the extra amp draw from a 5U4B OK ?? I know they are fine in the Carr's as per Steve's email to me but I may try one in the MAZ too if it's OK just to see if it effects the compression/sound much .
