I do not play out anymore, and frankly I haven't powered up either of my Z amps in quite a while. But I'm still an electric player at heart, and there will never be a time that I live without an amp around. So I'm thinking of trading my Maz Jr NR for a Maz 8. The only thing is, I really like the smaller combo cab available for the Ghia 1x10 - anyone have both and can compare portability and weight? I think I have a pretty good understanding of the tone differences, just wondering about the difference you find between the 1x10 and the 1x12 studio cab.

Had both steve (ghia 1/10)...yeah the 1/10 cab is a slam dunk for size...but it was lacking that last bito umph to low end,No matter how one tries to justify the size to sound ratio...it will never be a 12 cab.
The maz 18/maz 8 studio cab (own maz 18 studio) is just light enough and portable enough.Has tone depth,lightness...to me its perfect.
That's one of the biggest things I look at anymore in consideration (57 yrs) and im not feeling any younger these days.

Having had a Maz8 studio combo for a couple of weeks now , I will say the size-to-sound ratio is incredible. Very manageable , and this amp can sound great even at low volume. You will not be disappointed if you get one Steve. Awesome versatility.

just wondering about the difference you find between the 1x10 and the 1x12 studio cab. About 2 inches , give or take. (Sorry - couldn't resist..... )

I have both. MAZ 8 may be heavier but it seems easier to carry.
Wildly flexible amp. I bet you'll love it.

If you have to go down to one amp, which is what I'm considering, it seems the Maz series has the most to offer. And for just around the house playing, the 8 would be the ticket. In fact, the 8 with a Brake Lite might even be the perfect home amp.

MAZ 8 SC w Blue is a great set up. I recommend the Brake Lite for flexibility at home.
As much as I love my 1x10 Ghia, I think the MAZ 8 would get the nod if I could only have one of those two.

How does the 8 compare to the 18 in tonal flavor ? I have found one available in the UK in the studio cab with a blue at a little over 50% of a new one so its got my attention.

It's really pretty different. the single power tube 8 gets you much better access to the power tube grind. Really a super flexible amp.

I'm in the same boat...Have tried the following Z's thus far:
MAZ 38: Sounded brittle and ice picky...probably because I never opened the amp up and let it breathe...much too loud for my needs! Carmen Ghia: Never bonded with it...had a one dimensional sound (for me), and was also loud...never got the volume over 9 o'clock at a gig. Stang Ray: One of the best sounding/feeling amps I have ever played...but LOUD!!! I will probably never go above 8 o'clock at a gig.
So, basically all of the Z's I've owned have never been able to get to their sweet spot in a gigging situation. I'd love to keep my 212 cabinet with blues, and thinking a Maz 8 head may be the ticket? I considered an M-12, but am afraid that it may too clean? I also own a Princeton Reverb Reissue, and don't want to drop the cash to duplicate that type of sound.
I just watched the Peach Guitars demo of the MAZ 8, and that little amp sounded glorious! Do you think I'm on the right path considering a MAZ 8 head into a 212 cab with blues, or am I better off with the M-12, so as not to duplicate the Princeton Reverb?
Thanks in advance!

I don't think any of the z you mentioned will be duplicated (sound like Princeton ri).I have never plugged into the 8.I have always enjoyed the maz 18 at any volume though...just having master really is a deal breaker.Cant imagine the 8 is too far from the tree...sort of speak.
I tried a Princeton clone for 1/2 a day (20watts)...sound was nice...the maz 18 was spankin it.i know different design...I don't think you have to worry about that

I love the M-12 thru a 2x12 with a Blue and Gold. But I am debating on a Maz8 head to go with it. Plus I have a Remedy which IMO is a Great AMP that DOC turned into the Perfect AMP with the MV. I have used the M12 and Remedy together thru a Gold -SWEET- But I think I can do a Similar thing with the MAZ8 and M-12 having a Brit and American distortion with the 3 amps Using the M-12 for cleans- Although the M-12 with all knobs to 3:00 is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Personally if I could have just one AMP - I want to say it would be the Remedy-M12-Maz8 in that order of preference. But it's JMO

Steve, I'm holed up with just my MAZ 8 and a Squier Tele for a couple days; no pedals. It sounds just wonderful. You can get a ton of different tones just by using the guitar controls and the eq bypass. I've been playing in triode so far. May flip it to pentode today

^ Studio cab , Barry. I've been playing mine constantly at all different volumes and settings. Forget the cab size , this bugger can sound huge.

The 8 is a great amp no doubt, pair it up with another low wattage amp & season to taste as well. Playing high powered amps solo, to me isn't as much fun without drummers etc... Ymmv

I have one that I play primarily at Church and small venue blues jams. I'm really pleased with it.

Between the Ghia and the Maz 8 what has the most flexible and 'chimey' cleans?

Between the Ghia and the Maz 8 what has the most flexible and 'chimey' cleans? Hard to answer , and I'm hoping someone with both will respond. The Ghia has more volume , so may have more headroom and thus-maybe- more cleans available. OTH , the 8 has some pretty sweet chime and has the pentode / triode switch so might offer more flexibility as to the types of cleans available.

Ok cool thanks for the quick reply! I'm more interested in the maz 8, it seems more ideal for the solo/practice playing that i do since i dont gig.

Between the Ghia and the Maz 8 what has the most flexible and 'chimey' cleans? Imo, the MAZ 8. The Ghia gets grit in its tone pretty low on the volume knob. By working the combination of Volume and Master on the 8 you can get it to stay quite clean. With a Celestion Blue or similar speaker the chime is there. The Ghia also can do a bright tone quite nicely, but I wouldn't call it 'chimey'.
