Can anyone tell a difference in a rectifier tube? They're not suppose to effect tone. But perhaps sponginess (sp?) and/or attack. Will it effect overall volume too?

I went from a Sovtek GZ34 to a Mullard and it seems to be less spongy now.

Actually, the impact things quite a bit as a good rectifer raises voltages across the entire amp and a good one delivers current that is beyond spec while most new ones just meet spec by a very narrow margin.

what happens if the voltages do go higher say on the ef86, 12ax7 and KT66 can i just rebias? Won't the higher voltages still remain in the preamp etc... and what would be the tolerances for the amp to be still be in an optimum range. My RT 66 has #4 rating GT KT66's HP and according to some info the Dr. sent me a while back, he said to set to about 460v on the red/white wire. With my tubes biased at 36mA. I'm getting 485 on the plates of KT66 about 105 on plate of EF86 and 134 on screen EF86. The amp sound fine but i'm wondering if all the voltages are within spec with such a discrepancy at the power tubes.

The amp sound fine but i'm wondering if all the voltages are within spec with such a discrepancy at the power tubes. With 485 on the plates using a 30 watt figure for the KT66HP: 485 V 30 W 40% 50% 60% 70% 25 31 37 43 37mA is 60% as an example above. But I like using a figure of 25 watts for the KT66HP so this is the table: 485 V 25 W 40% 50% 60% 70% 21 26 31 36 So ... 30-34mA or so is where I would set things if you have 485 volts on pin 3. You do not have to worry about the EF86.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
I'm actually adding another question, what things can i do to maximize clean headroom? right now I don't even need an OD pedal as I can get all i want straight in, but i remember a RT66 i played in a studio where it seemed to be all clean. thanks

Or even more .... 12AU7.
