Were there some of the EZG combos made without a Z logo on them?

Probably not "made" that way, but it's possible somebody might've taken off the "Z" from the cabinet/grillcloth.

Looks like it just fell off--they do that, sometimes.

Thanks guys - strongly leaning towards adding this to the arsenal. Gonna go test-drive her tonight.

If you like big, bold cleans, this is your guy. One thing about the older EZGs is that after the amp was introduced some users had trouble with the bass level--too much boom. So Doc offered a bass mod, similar to the way he did the Remedy mods a year or so ago. If this is a CL thing, listen for the bass content and see if you can get the bass level where you want it. Ask the guy if he's had the mod done. Not sure if it's still being offered, or if that's even something you'd want to mess with.

I just emailed the owner and asked. I think it's a 2011 model if that means anything.

2011 is pre-mod so you should ask whether it has been done. More than likely not. It amounts to the replacement of a few components. I believe that the Doc's shop still does the mod or can tell you the specifics so you can have a qualified tech do it if you feel it needs to be done.

I'll see - going to try it out tonight. I play mainly tele, so I doubt it will be too big an issue though unless it's ridiculously bass heavy. I'm looking at either it or a Maz38, but I'm not an el84 fan and I want a Fender-voiced clean platform with lots of headroom for country - dirt will come from pedals.

You will love the EZG...I picked one up recently and have a hard time turning it off! Don't stress too much over the "bass mod"....especially with single coils. The serial number on mine implies it is on the fence of being shipped with the mod or just before it became standard. So far I like the bass control anywhere from " almost off" (mostly with humbuckers) to "11 o'clock" (mostly single coil strat and tele). Either way, I'm a big fan of the tone.

Thanks ;-)
I just got off the phone with the good Doctor himself - what an awesome dude! I'm perfectly confident in picking it up. I'll run the serial by them to see once I have it, but tele single coils, p90s and Firebird pups will be its main diet and I don't keep overly bright so we should be good to go ;-)

If it hasn't had the bass mod done, play it for a while first... especially with a band and out live, mines an earlier one and does not have the mod and for me, I don't think I'd get it done anyway cause I like mine the way it is.
I just leave my Bass almost off around 8:00 on the dial... works fine, big tone with a Tele or Strat.

I guess my question should be how bad are we talking here? You will have to judge for yourself. The one I bought new the first year of realease was unusable (too much bass with all cab and pup combinations even when it was all the way off) and I had to return it after a week. I wanted one of these so bad I decided to roll the dice on a used head (also pre mod) about 5 months ago and just get the mod done. This one didn't need it at all (same cabs and mostly the same guitars\pups)and I'm able to use the entire range of the bass knob so I'm thinking there was a problem with the first one. Tube damaged in shipping or something. Night and day difference. Great amp and I hope you like the one you are considering.

It is a GREAT amp--my search for a "big" amp is over. Also pretty happy with my small and medium amps.

I purchased a pre mod version and it does not need the mod in my opinion. For Fendery clean it kills and some...

I Just got my EZG head back from the the Dr Z shop. Had the reverb tank replaced , several tubes replaced, bias set , and the bass mod. In my opinion it was a worthwhile mod! The bass knob is now much more useable. Before the mod, I couldn't go past 9:00 without getting too much boom out of the amp and I was experience some unwanted bass resonance/feedback. Now the bass control is on a par with the mid and treble control and I can run all three knobs through a fuller range. The amp sounds fantastic! My amp is one of the anniversary models with the oval front. I also want to say that the repair dept at Dr Z amps is the best! Throughout the process , Don was constantly in touch with me via email, and even emailed pics of the interior of the chassis to show exactly was done to the amp. No wonder Z owners are the most loyal customers in the business.

Good report shiner51. Your before\after sounds like my own experience enough for me to wonder whether the pre-mod used head I got the second time around hadn't had the mod done without the prior owner being aware. I have not had the need to pull the chassis yet so I have not verified the specs on the bass circuit pot & caps. I didn't even find the first one usable from fully off to 9:00 on the bass knob. On this one I can leave it at noon and adjust from there, just like the mid and treble. Congratulations.

I could see needing the bass mod if you use a 4x10 but I think it's fine through a 2x12. I just keep the bass knob around 8-9:00. No problem with that.
