I posted the below in the RxES area but thought it would be something cool to know for Stringray, Z-28, Route 66, KT-45, and Delta 88 folks also. I do not know if Mike at KCA made a boo boo on the Mullards he has or just had a boxcar load of them fall into his lap but I do not know how long these will last: If you have the money ... Mike at www.kcanostubes.com has some great EF86's: kcanostubes.com/content/estore_details.asp?product=324 These are even more articulate than the Dario. kcanostubes.com/content/estore_details.asp?product=141 is an amazing tube at a stupid low price ... I do not know how many of these he has but this tube is every bit the tube the GEC is and Mullard is the one that invented this tube! I think Mike may have messed up on the pricing on this tube or found a truckload of them somewhere and dropped the price. This is easily a $90 tube.

Thanks for the heads up Myles. I can't wait to compare this to the Dario in my Z-28. Grabbed a NOS 5751 while I was at it ;D When you compare them maybe write up your findings for everybody. It is always great to get many sides of the story. If you have the time, give amp settings, speaker(s), guitar and pickups, a bit on your style, etc.

My tube has arrived. This box looks pristine, I can barely bear to open it. Well, that'll change just as soon as I get home. Thanks Mike!

I have some *very* early experiences with this tube. I'll preface with "I'm keeping it in there (Z28)."
It feels slightly less stronger than the GEC, but perhaps mellower is a better word. It's more "middley" and not as "crispy" but is still quite capable of driving musically excited electrons down the path. It's a real tossup to me which to use, actually. I love drving the amp with the GEC installed, this Mullard is just a little warmer overall. It's definetly a nice option.
I noticed my tube is a little different looking than the photo - the protective screen is solid as opposed to perforated.
Thanks again Myles for pointing this sale out, and thanks Mike for the speedy shipping! Terry

There were a number of different shielding screens over the years .... some looked like a screen, there were waffle screens, solid screens, etc. These seemed to make no difference in the tubes specs, tone, performance, etc.
They were all great.

Terry, I got mine today & look forward to trying it out tonight. Mine is perforated like the pic...wonder what the dif is? awesome - what EF86 do you have installed now? The Dario? I didn't get the opportunity to compare to that. I'll run the Z28 with this Mullard through some paces tomorrow night - the drummer is said to be showing up at practice.....

Everybody should treat themselves to the joy of taking a NOS Mullard from it's pristine box, slowly unwrapping the top quality packing material, and revealing the tube in all it glory. (Insert angelic choir sound here). I've never gotten a NOS tube in perfect packaging before. Got mine installed in the Z-28--what a great tube! The I really noticed the difference with the amp up around 2 or 3 o'clock. I was happy, (I had a Dario in before) then I started firing up my pedals...whoa! I thought the Z-28 liked pedals before--huge difference. I ran the following through their paces: RC Booster, Analogman Silver TS-9, Ac Booster, Divided by 13 Dyna Ranger, Mojo Vibe and Replica Delay. Everything sounded more...accurate, I guess. Hard to describe. I figured I was experiencing the placebo effect, so I let the amp cool and put the Dario back in. Good, but not the same. The Mullard is in to stay. I later replaced the stock 5751 with one of Mike's balanced GE 5751's. Killer cleans and more consistent tones when pushed. I guess there's something to all that "tube voodoo" after all. The Z-28 is such a fun amp to taste tubes with... Thanks again Myles and I'll be thanking Mike at KCA with more business in the future.

Thanks for this myles - since I just traded away my Mazerati in favor of a 6545, I figured I needed to make sure my tubes were in good order, and remembered this thread. Got two of the Mullards on the way here. Hopefully that keeps me in good tone for the foreseeable future!

I heard over the weekend that Groove Tube, or somebody, is tooling up to start making good EF86s. I'm hoping so. I would hate to rely on NOS.

It is not GT making the EF86. JJ has one and the EH folks are getting theirs together. In the case of the EH I hope it is not their last Sovtek tube with a relabel.
The JJ could be a great one as the tend to make stuff that is pretty darn bulletproof and that is what a new EF86 needs to have to compete with NOS ones.
