I just got my new Z28 put into my 1x10 w/ an Eminence Lil Buddy and Brakelite. I have a small pedal board with an original Gristle King (Z28 loves the Luxury Drive as most amps do), a DOD FX65 Chorus, VL Analog Chorus, and soon a Wampler Faux Tape w/tap. Played my Cabronita Esquire w/ TV Jones Classic; P90 LP Jr; '84 MIJ Strat w/ Noiseless Pups; gotta Les Paul Classic but 2 hours past my bedtime and I had to throw in the towel. Could be a long day at work today but it was worth it! I was messing around with the settings last night and found some real magical cleans with the
Treble - Dime'd Bass - Noon Volume - 9 o'clock (or below/gets LOUD fast)
I played all 3 guitars and they all sounded great and I can't remember any amp emphasizing the unique nuances of each guitar the way the Z28 does. The Strat with these settings above were indescribably sweet. I never really liked Strats much until last night. The effects I have listed also sounded good at all experimental settings but seem to really come to life with this particular setting. The Brakelite also seems not to effect the overall response of the Z28 like it did the Maz Jr or the Carmen Ghia.?. Not sure if its the bigger tubes, over output or what... maybe someone can chime in on that?
As much as players love Dr. Z's amps, I can't believe more people don't rant and rave about this little monster!!!

We rant and rave but it's much easier to just play the amp and let it do the talking.

You should get a kick out of the Faux Tape Echo. Watch some you tube demos on it. It will do a tone of things.

Interesting you like the treble dimed. For me, the volume is in the 10:00 neighborhood, bass is at 1:00, treble at 11:00.

First, I've used a Lil Buddy in a Pro Junior and really liked it, particularly for jazz because of what I heard as a little more breadth due to the speaker's high end roll-off.
Second, in my 50 years plus of doing this, a long night last night is usually worth a long day today.
Third, and you probably already did this, but I always start with everything at noon and dial things up and down from there in order to get the parameters defined for my ears. There are a lot of guys here who live with their guitar volume and/or tone dimed at all times; I think, particularly with a good guitar with good pickups, you can add another dimension to things if you start with guitar tone and volume at, say, 6 or 7 and then start tweaking whatever else is in your signal chain. IMHO, once you dime any guitar or amp control, you are taking whatever element it makes up of your signal out of the equation as far as variability and range and this can be sonically limiting.
This amp works for a lot of playing; I feel pretty sure that you'll like it.

Thanks for the responses... great feedback. I only like the treble dimed below 9 o'clock volume... it seems to preserve a lot dimension that other amps loose when playing at very low volume settings. For me, the Z28 has the most dynamic tone stack of any Z I've owned... Maz Jr included. The Z28 is way more amp than I will ever need watt wise but the full "un-rounded" (loose and open around the edges) sound is what I was after and I like it A LOT!!! I use a lot of ambient effects in my playing and the Z28 adds life and dimension (with effects engaged) I have not experienced with other amps, including Z amps.
I couldn't be happier. I am glad I picked this one up later in my playing years after developing a great appreciation for dimension, tones, and responsiveness. This is a real keeper.
Thanks again to those who chimed in...

I just looked at my March post and realized I didn't answer the question.
For archtops, amp volume at noon, bass and treble both at 9 o'clock. Guitar volume between 3 and 5, guitar tone between 2and 5
For CS336 or Guild Bluesbird, amp volume anywhere 9 o'clock to noon, bass and treble both at 1 o'clock. Guitar volume between 5 and 7, tone between 6 and 8.
I play my Tele through my Rati exclusively; my Strat lives in the closet (sorry, guys, but after 25 years, I just don't like it).

I've found the Z28 can be dialed in to sound killer with most any guitar BUT, every different guitar/pickup combination seems to me to sound best with markedly different settings. For example:
Tele=1,12,1 Strat=2,10,10 Strat with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails/Cool Rails=12,8,5 Reverend with humbuckers=10,2,2

I've got two favorites with a strat- everything at 11 o'clock for clean pedal platform. For a round clean/clean with hair the volume comes down to around 9 and the treble goes up to around 2 o'clock. The second one sounds best with american type speakers to me.

Three #s - 3:00; 3:00; and 3:00, That is all! I finally got to use this setting on New Years Eve playing outside. OMG is all I can say. I didn't touch my overdrive pedals. I just turned up and turned down. Tele and a strat. Klein '52 classics in the tele (low output), Wagner strat pickups in the strat (a little hotter). WGS-ET65 in the cabinet. (It is a combo). The only problem I had all night was that we had to stop. Did I mention it was 37 deg? Didn't care. Dr. Z does that you.
