I've read that the PI tube is very critical and should be balanced for optimum performance.
What does this mean exactly?
If this is such a critical tube, why are Sovtek LPSs used in the Maz amps, as I thought Sovtek is at the bottom of the heap for tone out of all the new production tubes?

Go to my GAB website as there is a lot of info on this.
The PI is not in the tone and gain stage. It is a current pusher and is a long plate tube. The 12AX7M is the other one the Doc uses a lot and this is the tube I use in all of my clients amps.
If you look on the GT website at the SAG-AX7-MPI there is more on matched phase inverters.

Thanks Myles. I checked out your most excellent GAP site and have a better understanding of a PI's function. Can I assume that the 12AX7LPS tubes in the Z amps used for the PI are actually tested for proper balance? If so, who does the testing. Dr. Z or his supplier?

Z gets his tubes from various sources but in the amps I have seen and checked he seems to select tubes in the phase inverter position to be very closely balanced. He does this himself.
