I've been searching the net for ef86 tubes and don't seem to be finding many. Can somone suggest some manufaturers/distributers on the net where I can buy some?
I'm also interested to know which ones are better/worse for:
1. lifespan 2. tone (subjective) 3. affordibility 4. availability

Hey flem
You can't go wrong with Mike at kcanostubes.com. He seems to have a bunch of cool NOS EF86 tubes. He's on this forum, too.

It's a pretty simple answer. You've got the new Russian ones sold under the Sovtek and Svetlana names (and often rebranded in various ways (including Mullard, Siemens, etc) and all of the NOS tubes.
I'm not even sure if the Russian ones are still available, but the difference in quality (discounting tone which is totally subjective) is so great that ANY of the NOS ones are FAR superior to the Russian tubes.
Myles ran some curve traces on a bunch of these a while back and the Russian ones didn't even meet the published spec while ALL of the NOS tubes he tested exceeded specs.
You can't go wrong with any of the NOS EF86s. The Dario Miniwatts seem to be a favorite with Z owners including Mike Z.

To my ear, you simply cannot beat a telefunken ef-86. Very, very gainy and silky smooth. Much closer to a "Robben Ford" type sound than the Miniwatt, which is also a great tube-just not as much hair.
