I've read you can get a KT-45 to be warmer and break up sooner with a 5v4 rectifier.
Any suggestion on where to get one/which brand? Also do I need to re-bias when changing a rectifier?

Try a 5u4 for even more voltage drop and yes you should rebias.

This guy is good for NOS tubes. Tell him what your looking for, he'll help you get there. www.kcanostubes.com/catalog/16You can also try a good attenuator. Bottom line though, the KT45 is loud, with alot of head room no matter what you do really.

Not being facetious, but maybe you have the wrong amp; not to worry, I'm pretty sure that there's a Z amp (or several) that does exactly what you want right out of the box.

I think the Route 66 might be closer to what you're looking for. I find the KT to sound kinda hard and abrasive sounding and breaks up too early for me. I found that an EP Booster really warmed and fattened up my KT.

Yes, I'm with Randall; the Route 66 is a completely different animal than the KT45 (I have both, plus a Z28 and Rati v2) and gives up drive a lot further down the knobs than a KT. The KT may very well be a better clean platform for pedals than an organic overrdriving amp (personally, I use my KT as strictly a clean amp with my archtops for jazz). The Route has a really thick sound and sounds great either clean or overdriven.

i never tried the 5u4g, but the 5V4 definitely is closer to what you want. takes that hard edge off.

With a Tube Rectifier I only get breakup around 3 o'clock on the volume.

Edo,
Agreed.
My KT is MIGHTY loud by the time it breaks up, almost like the proverbial "11."

Comparatively speaking...The KT-45 does not break up early! When it does (above 2:00-3:00) it is some really good overdrive but that is over the rainbow loud for most situations although it only gets louder to a point above 1:00 then it starts to grind. Typically I play mine at about 11:00 and it is still plenty clean (and loud) with the stock solid state rectifier.

Is the 5U4 rectifier the spec rectifier tube? I just got a used one with no tube chart and a 5U4 installed. The main website says it is currently spec'd with a ss rectifier.
Seems like a GZ34 might be the standard tube spec but I can't find a reference on that-

The Tube Store sells a replacement set of tubes for the KT45 that has a 5AR4 as the rectifier tube.
This set is what I have in mine.

Thanks. It's interesting that some of the amps list specific brands. For example the KT-45 lists a Sovtek 5AR4 but the EZG50 says JJ GZ34. I guess this just depends on what was prevalent at the time the amp was developed.

There may also be a difference based on how it interacts with the other components in each amp. Doc usually is pretty good at matching tubes to specific amps.

I had a chance to run through my rectifier stash. In addition to the 5U4 (RCA?) I got with the amp I tried a Sovtek 5AR4 and a GE 5R4. I did not try a 5Y3. The 5R4 gave the earliest breakup as you might expect, but overall I preferred the 5AR4. YMMV.
