Hey everyone
Anybody try a solid-state plug-in in their tube rectified amp? I'd like to try one in my Mazerati just for kicks.
Thanks!

I bought a GTSS for a GZ34 and plugged it into my 6545.
The amp was a little louder, and a little chrunchier when cranked. The tone was a little colder to my ears. Big difference in loss of compression.
I only had the GTSS in for an hour before I put the GZ34 back in. Somehow I find the amp is a little sweeter sounding with the tube rectifier.
It's all personal taste. Some people notice a difference and some don't. Buy one, stick it in and try it.
I think these are good to have as a back up for your tube. Small enough to throw in your guitar case, more durable that an extra tube, and mine was affordable at $22 cnd. Easy to swap into your amp in a pinch.

I was curious what the output voltage difference was with the GTSS GZ34/5R4 replacement vs. the GZ34/5R4 tube. I pulled the chassis out and measured the outputs directly off of the rectifier.
5R4 = 417Vdc
GTSS = 430Vdc
A difference of 13Vdc. Is this enough to change the charateristics of the amp?

You may want to look at Pin 3 of the output sockets and affirm that you have the same voltages. Also ... 5R4 as you said .... I assume this was a 5AR4 / GZ34 and not a 5U4. It is not as much the voltage as much as it is the response and rise time of a solid state unit is much faster. The amp will play and respond differently.
