I have to ask "Why". As in, why spend the time and treasure developing and tooling up for a tube that would have a limited market instead of concentrating on improving the quality of existing products.

I have to ask "Why". As in, why spend the time and treasure developing and tooling up for a tube that would have a limited market instead of concentrating on improving the quality of existing products. Because labor, materials and effort are more expensive than just coming out with a rehash of an older design with a few changes, if any, after the prior sparkle has vanished and the market on a prior tube is gone. This seems to be the business model of most folks today. There is really little if any retooling necessary. The 12AX7EH as an example has gone through a dozen "remakes" in the last half a dozen years. The name is changed or the shape of a getter changes. The 12AX7LP turns into a "Mullard". A 6550 turns into all sorts of things.

I know I've mentioned this before but I bought a large quantity of current production tubes (mostly JJ ) about 10 to 15 years ago and also several NOS tubes. Hopefully enough to last me the rest of my playing career, which seems to be winding down. I'm so glad I did because the tube marketplace is so frustrating. I have about a half dozen players that I still do repair work for. When it comes to buying tubes for their amps I have them buy their own tubes and bring them to me for biasing and such. That way there is no question about what my markup is and they have to deal with their vendor about failures. I try to give them some advice on what to purchase but I'm not really up on what's out there anymore. Mostly I try to get them to just buy from reputable dealers.

DR.Z Doc, I will leave it to you. There are some great amps that made the most out of a KT66 .... Marshall Bluesbreaker, original Marshall 100 watter and a few more but the Route 66 with the clean signal path and the spectacular pedal nature via a pentode front end is about as great as is gets. The Route 66 continues to be a classic. So... if you come up with some great KT-150 design I for one will not be surprised, probably just amazed as usual. P.S. There is a Z decal on the back of my car
