How many of you use single coils out of the delta? I find the amp is a little too harsh for single coils.... But I've only tried a strat with fender noiseless pickups.. Anybody tried a tele or filtertrons/t.v. jones pickups out of this amp?

i use a fernandes guitar with tv trons (tv jones) in it and also an ibanez hollowbody with seymour duncan phat cats. i can't get a bad sound out of the delta with either one of the guitars. the tubes are all stock in the delta except for the ef86 which is amperex. i'm also using a stock zbest 2x12 which has been well broken in. what is your setup like? maybe you could change tubes or something else. i've never found the delta to be harsh. dunno if that helped you at all

Thanks for the reply..
I'm using a stock delta 88, nothing changed from the doc's bench. I'm using it with the Z best 2-12...
I use an RC boost and joyride for dirty tones...
I find this amp is really loud... i just bought the air brake and it lowers the volume, but i find i lose some of the dynamics after the 2nd attenuation level....
do you find it loud? do you use the airbrake? do you gig with it? If so, what volume are able to play it at during the gig?
do you wn any other z's?? I realy like the stang ray out of single coils and the maz 18 as well....

yes, the amp can definitely get very loud. i don't use an airbrake and yes i gig with it at larger places but i've played out at small places as well. i also have a z28 that i use depending on what i feel like playing. the other guitarist in my band plays a stangray and route 66. the cool thing about the delta (and route 66) is that it sounds amazing at any volume. i use the stock gt kt88's and biased as cold as it will go. go here: www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/doctorzamps.htmland read what myles has to say about the delta. i use a few different pedals for flavor: blackstone mosfet overdrive, mi audio crunchbox, GGG standard overdrive, and soon to be the tim/timmy combination (which i think will sound the best). the blackstone is my first choice with the delta. my volume on the delta is usually between 8pm and 9pm depending on the place. hope that helps some.

Very interesting, I heard a lot of great things about the mosfet, i think our local store just ordered them....
what do you by biasing it as coold as it gets?
Thanks for the link to the blueprinting site, some very interesting stuff on there, Myles is quite the tech guru!

you are welcome i think that biasing the delta colder makes for less clean headroom and longer tube life. that's about all. the amp breaks up at a lower volume. the blackstone is definitely a good pedal but i'm anxious to see how it compares with the tim/timmy pedals.

sounds good.. I think that would be good for me to do because I don't need the clean headroom and can use the extra crunch...
... I now have to find a good tech in the Montreal area...

After playing with the settings, I'm getting addicted to the strat into my Delta.
2 reasons it wasn't sounding right: 1) for years, I was used to hearing my strat through my piece of trash Laney combo + my useless marshall jcm 2000 2) My treble is always around 3:00-4:00 on my amp, + my clean boost + overdrive---WAY TOO MUCH TREBLE!!!
So now with the right settings, this tone is full of smack! Hits you like a ton of bricks!!!

I always roll my tone control down a little on my strat & tele to get the tone I want.

I've got to start doing that a little more often!
Can't wait to hear the new amp the Doc came up with for Joe Walsh with 6L6's and the EZG-40 as well. I need a gritty fenderish type amp that'll take my strat over the top but in a combo..

Mine doesn't sound harsh at all with single coils, unless you think of the Ritchie Blackmore style tone as harsh. Big, tough, and as clangy as you might want, but not harsh. The Delta 88, like the other Z amps I've heard, really gives you the difference in tone and power between humbuckers and single coils. With my Les Paul, I've got a nice AC/DC style tone with the Bass control on 11:00 and the Treble control at noon. When I plug the Strat in, I have to get both tone controls well into the top half of their travel before I get that righteous Deep Purple/Rainbow thing going on. Crikey
