I assumed when I bought this amp that the kt45 side would be the obvious choice for clean tones. It turns out that I love the mushy bottom end of the srz side and I love how it takes pedals. Problem is, I can't get it totally clean. Even with the gain off, I'm still getting a tiny bit of break up. I use p90's or paf style hum buckets. Nothing really hot. So the question is, does this amp get really clean? Do I need to change some preamp tube values? Or is there something wrong? I plan to change the power tubes to kt77's, but that shouldn't affect this issue. I think....

The point of the amp is to have a clean side and a dirty side, and you're trying to use the dirty side for clean. I would think you could use a lower gain preamp tube to do this, but the signal level going into the front end of the amp can also mitigate the issue. How does it sound with the guitar volume at "5" instead of wide open?

It cleans up with the vol rolled back or a weak pickup. I want to make sure it's not in need of repair since I'm getting a slight distortion with th gain on zero. And if I could get it cleaner, maybe I just need an srz65...

I don't think the amp was designed to be really clean. It gets quasi clean but not Stangray cleans.

Fresh tubes and a proper bias might be the only fix you need. If you want a tune up contact the Z shop. They have a great turn around. You'll have your amp back in no time.

Wife and kids were out. Cranked it. The srz side got quite loud and stayed clean. New power tubes did the trick. Haven't experimented with preamp tubes yet.
