Hey guys! Help me out here...
Have you played/owned any of Z's EL-84 based amps?
If so, can you give me any indication of the similarities/differences between them and the Galaxie?
I'm selling my Galaxie (non-MV, Brake Lite, cover) and was asked this by a potential buyer. I always have trouble describing how an amp "sounds". All I can think of is "Tweed on steroids". Can anyone give me some good words about "similarities/differences"?
Thanks! Pete

I'd just tell him what you thought and then say ," It just sounds awesome! " - Hope others can be more helpful...When I looked into Galaxies the tweed on steroids and damn loud came up a lot.

Welllll....I think the BASIC difference is that EL84 amps are more "British" sounding, and the 6L6 amps are more "American" sounding. BRITISH; think Vox, Marshall, etc. ...more growl and chime, and usually solid-state rectifier. AMERICAN; think Blackface or Tweed Fender..."harder" sounding (blackface), or squishy (tweed), fat/softer low end, usually tube rectifier, etc. This is very much a generalization, and speakers factor in there some too, but I think that's sort of a brief overview.

If you need an example of a guy that's used the amp Joe Walsh is a good example. The amp gets great Joe Walsh tones.

I really don't think it's possible to adequately put this kind of thing into words, although what you said in your OP and what 'Simpleton' said pretty much nails it. IMO the Galaxie is the most underrated Z amp (.....although I may be biased )!! Mine has the Ch2 MV mod...........when I hit that footswitch.......STAND BACK! The Ghia 1 x 10 is my 'grab and go' and I love my MAZ18NR, but the Gal' is probably the best amp I've ever owned in almost 50 years of playing out. (Yes, I really am that old. )

Milky- I think thou art correctly biased! Pete- There's a bite and sting on a 6L6 when you push it. I feel the 84's and 34's can be more welcoming (in the pocket) to most guitarists. As remarked above it can vary greatly with the circuit, transformers, and speakers. The 6L6 to me has more bite and sass compressing later.

6L6 (Supro/Twin) ~ Zep I/Beach Boys (from the same era)
EL84 (Vox) ~ Beatles/Monkees (from the same era)
