This thing just slays me. With a 4x10? Holy crap. I'm done--DONE! (Famous last words...)
But seriously--pretty much exactly what I was looking for. HUGE when turned up a bit, but some super nice, and still big-sounding, tones at lower settings. The reverb is perfect. Lots of boom on the low e-string, depending on pedal settings, which pickup you're on, etc., but nothing that can't be dialed down. What I love is the sense of power, the SIZE of the notes as they leap out of the speakers--it's not just a volume thing. Big, round, SRV-ish notes is what this critter's all about. Crazy good with a Strat. Loves pedals. Just what I wanted.

If you like SRV-ish stuff, you'll dig it. Huge, sustaining, ringing notes with a Strat--you can really get that high e-string stang thang that Stevie did all the time, as well as the big, rumbling bottom end. Great amp. A classic. Takes pedals like a champ, too.

It really is an incredible amp. I don't agree with the comment that you can get the same results from a $400.00, 70's BF Super etc. because if that were the case everyone would be going that route and saving themselves alot of money. It does so much of what these Fenders did best plus it's own Z thing. It is one of the best clean amps around!

It's terrific. Good Supers do sound good, no question--but with the 4x10 this thing's got a depth and girth I've never heard from a Super--I've only played a few, but I've heard them a bunch--a couple of the established blues guys around here play Supers exclusively. It's got a better front end than a Super, too--it'll break up a little on its own and it takes pedals beautifully--better than my Maz 18, which is crazy. I was running it just now with my R8 and a Rat clone and it was pure Reverend Billy (but without the chops, of course). The only downside is that now I need to be in a band again so I can play this thing somewhere other than my house.

I wonder if it would sound just as big and deep with a 1x12 vintage 30? Im planning on picking up an ezg soon and just running it with my 1x12 v30 that I use with my maz. Thoughts?

I'll try it with a 1x12/Gold tomorrow and let you know what I think. Not a V30, but as close as I Can get.

Congrats on the EZG. Great that you are digging it. It really is an AWESOME amp.
I picked one up a couple weeks ago with a matching Z 4x10. I have not had the opportunity to have it turned up too loud for too long, but the tone that I have heard is truly a thing of beauty. And it is true about it sounding great at any volume, the pedals; everything seems to work well. Single coils shine! If I still have it (it's up in the BST and sometimes I think I'm crazy for that) the next time I visit my brother I may borrow his PRS and give it a run.
Is it crazy that the more I read these threads, the more I want to keep the EZG?

Well, you could, right? For me, it's kind of a logical "big" amp, given what I'm into musically these days. Much better fit for me than the Remedy, which had settings I liked but was a little too AC/DC 80's rock for me. It's a keeper--I just need someplace to play it!

Congratulations. I've had mine about a week and I'm still trying to figure out the pre\post interaction. Then you toss in the uniquely Z tone control behaviour and different guitars and this amp has a real learning curve. Have not even tried it through my 1x12 Gold cab yet. I may have to start documenting favorite settings. Something I have not had to do with any other Z amp. I know it's the honeymoon phase but this amp is fun. Here it is in its new home (I forgot how much bigger it was compared to the Z-28):

Nice, Nick. I'm pretty sure the EZG is the largest head in Doc's lineup.

It's huge. And heavy--40 lbs or so. Re the learning curve--man, I haven't gotten a bad sound out of it yet. With a Strat, I like it so far with pre at about 3:00 and post about 9:00, T & M around noon, B around 10:00, 'verb to taste. Big, super fat cleans that way, takes pedals very, very well. Haven't played with it as much with a Tele or a Lester.

Much better fit for me than the Remedy Since you've had both, how does it compare? I know they are different animals, but what are the things that make you favor the EZG?

I'm not sure I can articulate it other than the EZG is just a lot closer to the sound in my head when I pick up a guitar. The Rem is a great amp, but I struggled a little bit matching it up with speakers and pedals, and couldn't find more than one setting that worked for me. I think the lesson is that at least for now I'm more Fender-y than Marshall-y when it comes to Z amps. The EZG is a great clean platform with big, ballsy tone--the Rem will rip your face off. What I'm looking for in a "big" amp is something with the power and command of a Super, but with better tone. That's the EZG.

Heh , when I read your posts, I often think you should be on commission from the Doc - I suspect a few amps have been bought and sold based on your reviews after each new aquisition! How would you compare this to the Z28 (other than the obvious wattage difference...)?

Hah! God, I hope not. I'm just posting my own dumb opinions here.
The Z-28 has a very different front end and tone stack from the EZG--it'll break up beautifully on its own at higher settings (the famous 3/3/3 setting)--I haven't tried an equivalent setting with the EZG but I'm pretty sure it'd blow the roof off the neighbors' house. The '28 lives in the mids and upper mids (it has that in common with the Rem, actually), the EZG has a more classic blackface 6L6 tone--big round everything, less present in the upper mids. The EZG obviously has a lot more headroom; both take pedals beautifully. Even though the EZG has twice the wattage of the Z-28, it's nowhere near twice as loud--the '28 gets very loud very quickly without attenuation. The EZG, on the other hand, will produce great low volume cleans with no attenuation, which you can use as a platform for your pedals set at unity (or just above). The Z-28 is Keef; the EZG is SRV.

Thunder (EZG\6L6) and Lightning (Z-28\6V6 w ef86). A perfect storm. The EZG is big, round and moves the earth. The Z-28 has the immediacy and clarity of a non-tweed deluxe type amp (but with the tweed's great mids) that can turn into pushed tweed kind of OD. I believe that the Z-28 is the Doc's greatest design to date. If it had onboard reverb like the EZG, it would be my perfect amp. I'm biased (pun intended).

I've been running it with a Strat and the blue side of my Jetter Jet Drive (a pedal I was about to sell--ack!)--it's wonderful. Perfect breakup, to my ear--and not particularly loud. Love this amp! Five stars from the 'biscuit.

Well, gentlemen, I have been swayed... I have officially made a decision: the EZG is off the market for now You haven't had it that long and can always sell it later. Give it a chance to grow on you. A surf green EZG with a matching 4x10 is ultra cool.

^^^ What Ridgeback said. I held onto my Remedy for almost a year, thinking I didn't want to be hasty about selling it, and then wish I hadn't. I'm glad I did--it deserved my patience and careful consideration, I think--as weird as that would sound to a non-forumite--and even though I ultimately decided it wasn't right for me, I had fun messing with it and trying stuff out.

I really enjoy the Jetter Jetdrive and the Red Square with the EZG! These pedals are awesome for what I play and have ended my search for a while...I use a KOT v4 for my clean boost and sometimes a Fulltone FD on comp cut for a clean boost, many great pedals for the EZG Beasty

Hi Drew, I wouldn't get rid of that one. The LPs and Jazzmasters are a bit further down. Here is the entire current menagerie. The Maz combo and the surf green Z-verb are currently on the block but the rest are safe from my recent gear makeover frenzy (for now).
