I'm looking at a used Mini Z head as I'm searching for a smaller wattage amp to go with my Peavey Classic 50 stack (410e & 115e). I know the Mini Z only has 4 or 8 ohm outputs and both of my current cabs are 16 ohms each. I've read conflicting things about whether running it at 8 ohms into a 16 ohm cab would cause damage to the amp. Definitely don't want to do that to something as cool as a Z.
Thanks!

I was faced with the same situation, and even though I've read in any number of places that a one step mismatch is okay, I still just put an 8 ohm speaker in my cab (though I used the 16 ohm jobbie for a bit with no apparent problems).

8 ohm output into a 16 ohm load won't cause any problem with a tube amp. Transistor amp is another story. Some folks like the mismatch and say they like the sound better. Most can't hear a difference. It may make the amp seem about 3db quieter, which means just turn it up louder. Gives the power tubes more to work with. Turn it up more, what guitar player can resist that.

Yup, not problem going one step low>high, amp>speaker.
I always try out a new amp with mismatches out of curiosity; sometimes it sounds better, sometimes no different, sometimes a little too compressed as compared to a matched coupling.
I often run my Mini Z on 4ohm into an 8ohm 10" for maximum living room crunch.

Thanks, guys. Glad to hear that it shouldn't be a problem. I was gonna go try out the Mini yesterday but the damn snow got in the way.
