I took a chance and just bought another EZG head V-26273 (pre-mod 2011?). I do plan to play it for a while before I do anything to it but it seems almost certain that I will want to have the bass mod done based on my earlier experience with this amp. I'm looking for any information on the bass mod from someone who has had it done or who has had experience with both the pre and post mod versions.
I'm assuming that there have been no other changes to this amp since its release but if there have been, that information would be useful as well. If I'm handing it over to my local amp tech for the bass mod, I might want to have him do any other tweaks that would bring it up to current specs. Obviously the warranty is not an issue, professionally done mods can be reversed, and resale value is a crap shoot these days. Thanks in advance for any information. I always loved the concept of this amp and I'm looking forward to owning one for more than a few days this time around.

I thought I would share doctorice's response to a PM I sent him. Over a long period of looking at his posts, I have found we have a common frame of reference on things related to tone so this was very helpful to me with my pre-mod EZG on the way. Mike, I hope you don't mind me sharing this but I thought others with the pre-mod EZG might be interested in your experience\advice. From Mike:
"Unfortunately, I can't do a before-and-after comparison as I hadn't played my EZG much before a power tube went down and took out a resistor. I had the bass mod done at the same time as the repair.
I fired her up today with a Strat through a Z Best, which has a lot of bass. I think the sweep is very usable. With the bass knob all the way down I found the sound a little thin. With all the tone knobs at noon there was more bass than I like. However, it's important to note that I had both the pre and post around 10 o'clock. I did move those around a bit, and I came away with a few thoughts:
1. The tone changes as one uses different combinations of pre and post volumes. All the eq knobs have a pretty wide range so you can re-adjust the tone to your liking. As a result, you might choose "your" pre and post and decide that it needs only a little bass. Or you might find it needs more. It's there when you need it.
2. There's overlap, not surprisingly, between the mid and bass. If you back the mid down, compensating with a little more from the bass may be just the ticket.
I believe you'll be happy with the mod: I am. I suspect I would have had it done even if the amp hadn't gone down.
Hope this helps.
Mike"
Thanks again for your response Mike.

You're welcome, Nick. Now I'm itching to put it through the 4x10!

After my recent gear purge, I'm down to a 1x12 Gold cab and a home made pine 2x12 with a Weber 12F150 and 12A150. I'm sure a 4x10 is probably what the amp was designed for. Make sure you give us a report.

I think it is a good idea to try it as is for a while. Mine is a pre mod and I find it sounds perfect and usable. Of course it is nice to have your equipment updated in case you might be missing out on something... Either way you are going to love this amp long time, good luck!

Thanks, I plan to spend some time messing with it before doing any mods. My reservations stem from having purchased a new one when they first came out (09?) and not being able to get past the overpowering bass. I returned it for a refund after a few days. This time around, I bought it used so 1) I have a lot more time to play around with it as there is no time limit associated with returning it and 2) there is a Doc approved mod for the issue I was having the first time. Obviously, holding my breath until the brown truck comes.

Very cool Nick. Congratulations on a very cool amp. If that brown truck does not do it for you, I've got a red truck that'll be able to help out. :-)

Thanks Drew. I hope I get as much enjoyment out of the EZG as I did from your now departed Ray. Different flavors of wonderful clean tones (or that's the plan anyway). Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and that all is well with you. I'll call you if the brown truck lets me down.

Wow!!! I just had this amp delivered a couple of hours ago and I can't believe how great it sounds. It is everything I had hoped it would be. I played it for about an hour through one of the same cabs I tried the original one through 5 years ago and there was no comparison. There had to have been a problem with the one I bought before because the bass is very manageable at all ranges of the knobs on this head.
Thanks to Mike for a smooth and very satisfying transaction. He boxed it up like Fort Knox and after letting it warm up to room temp and installing\reseating all the tubes, it behaved like a champ right out of the shipping box. (Hair just starting to lay down on the back of my neck now).
I'm going back in the basement now and play with my new toy.

So glad it worked out for you! I thought it was a great amp, just not where my ear was taking me these days. Ask me again next month, and I might be headed back in that direction again

I know Mike, I've gone in phases as well amp-wise. I started with a Line6 modeler as I didn't know a Vox from a tweed tone when I first started playing 15 years ago. After I figured out what was what, it pretty much went blackface => tweed (6 years) => Dr Z EL-84s in various incarnations (5 years) => WATERSHED Tonal Moment Z-28!! => for the past 6 months I've been in the process of selling off the EL-84s. => Currently Z-28, EZG (thank you), and the Maz 18 NR combo which is for sale locally. I may decide to keep it because it is a great sounding amp with the Blue and my only combo but my ears are telling me that I'm done with the EL-84 tube for a while. The EZG kind of brings me full circle tonally after 14 years. "What a long strange trip it's been".

Nick, Great over the years assessment. Long strange trip indeed and a fun one. Including the day your Z's brought the Fuzz to your home. (No disrespect to the SPD - Z amps are not know for their fuzz) Glad the EZG met your expectations. Since discovering Dr Z amps I go thru the el84 or big bottle trends back and forth. The Maz 18 NR with a blue is a wonderful thing. Tough decision.

Actually, I believe it was your and Steve's Z's that brought the fuzz. That was a fun mini- Zfest day with you and Steve. You guys are great players. The cop was even pretty cool. The next door neighbor dog abuser jerk who turned us in moved out a few years ago. Good riddance but I wish I could have rescued his dogs before he left. They deserved better. The Maz will sell or it won't. I'll enjoy it for as long as I own it but I'll probably still keep listing it. I guess I've lost the taste for the EL-84 "crunchy chime" tones as a steady diet. That Ray you sold me was a special amp however. I hope I don't regret selling that one down the road but something had to go in order to fund the EZG.
