jcv,
I had a Budda SD18-1X12 combo for about 3 months!
I really liked the overdrive but never really bonded
with the cleans on it! I wanted those big round
fat clean tones that only 6L6's seem to give up!
Anyway I was looking real hard at the Fender's
newest 6L6 based amp the SUPER-SONIC 1X12
combo! I made a road trip over to ELITE MUSIC
SALES in Montgomery,AL about 3-1/2 weeks ago
and got to plug into the GALAXIE 1X12 combo
and man their it was! Those big fat tweedy
gorgeous tones that I was shooting for. I have
been so addicted to the amazing clean tones
from Channel 1 that I am just really getting
around to enjoying the roar of the gain that
is delivered by Channel 2! My recommendation
is that you seek out a dealer that has the Galaxie
combo or head in stock and take a couple of your
favorite guitars with you and give that "GAL" a
test run! You need to hear this amp in person
to appreciate it! The soundclips really to me don't
do justice to the GALAXIE!
As for how the volume controls work on each
channel here is my experience:
Channel 1 stays pretty clean up to about 12:00
on the vol. control. Channel 2 starts breaking
up at about 10:00 and really gives you a punchy
muscular overdrive from 12:00 on up on the
vol. control! The Bass and Treble controls are
super responsive in shaping the overall gain
and tone on both channels of the Galaxie!
Try to find a dealer that has one of the GAL-1X12
combos! The Celestion Reissue G12-65 speaker
is amazing with the GALAXIE! Best 12" speaker
I have heard myself! I would have to believe that
only the Celestion BLUE OR GOLD would possibly
top it! The speakers in your cabinet are the same
2 that DOC uses in the Z-BEST 2x12 CABINETS
but the Z-BEST is a closed cabinet! Their are plenty
of Z-NATICS here that can chime in with their
comments on how your AVATAR 2X12 Open-Back
cab would match up with the GALAXIE!
For the record this is one "LOUD MOFO" of an amp
and you will most likely want to get on of DOC's
Z-AIRBRAKES to tame it at home as well as gigging
out in smaller bars or venues!
Give us an update if you get to try out the Galaxie!
;D
