What's your favorite 5751's right now? Any production ones that are actually not rebranded 12ax7's or only NOS...It's time to get one for the ol' Ghia and soooo to the experts

This is just my opinion so here goes: I think most 5751's out there that are new production are just weak 12AX7's that didn't cut it in final testing. Rather than reject them , the just get labeled 5751. Which might be fine for a lot of applications. I think getting NOS will guarantee a tube built to correct specs , and NOS preamp tubes usually last for decades. My 2 cents....

KCA NOS has NOS Jan GE for 32 bucks , and lightly used tests-as- new GE for $30-. Considering a new JJ goes for around 16 , this is the cost for 2 JJ's. But either of those NOS / near NOS will probably last many years longer. You are correct , Myles published this advice on his Amplifier Blueprinting paper and has stated it many times here and I agree with it.

Just a little tip for anyone new to the tube game. NOS tubes may seem a little pricey but you should stock up on the ones you think you will need when you can because it's only going to get worse. In the long run most will be more cost effective than any new production tubes I can think of except maybe EL84s.
Also stock up on any new tubes that you like if they seem to be reliable. It will help you weather the dips in quality that most manufacturers seem to have from time to time. I bought a large stock of JJ EL84s about eight years ago when they were the about they best you could get and hopefully they will last until someone markets something equivalent.

I'd go NOS, but the Philips JAN 5751 is a terrible sounding tube in the couple of spots I've tried it in, so I can't recommend them.

Odd - I've had the same JAN Phillips 5751 in V2 in my Ghia since 2007 or so. Not a single problem.

5751s are verrrrry affordable in the NOS scheme of things & week worth the expense, IMO.
If KC doesn't do it for you, I've also had good luck with Tube Depot & Doug's Tubes.

I had the same experience with NOS Jan 5751 and NOS GE 5751 very disappointed with the noise floor and performance considering the price. I have since purchased a JJ, which is definitely a different tube to the stock ECC83,s ,but is very flat sounding tube in any position and poor in the PI. I have 2x gold pin EH 5751 in my 1974x ,one in the PI and one on trem channel, and they appear to perform well or at least do what I wanted of them. The best 5751 I had was 5751M from Groove tubes which I eventually had in the PI on my Maz but it blew after a couple of years use and can,t find a supplier with any in the UK.

I currently have Groove Tube EL84S's and GT 12AXR7 in my Ghia. Not sure the model of the little green GE tube. Anyways, I'm looking for more headroom and somebody mentioned that 5751's might help. I'm pretty clueless on tube stuff. Any suggestions? I know a guy locally who has a bunch of NOS tubes and can cut a good deal on them (he swears by them, for tone.)

A 5751 tube generally has 30% less gain then the 12ax7. depending on how much clean headroom you want, the 5751 is a good choice or if you need a little more try a 12au7.

Thanks BPFan. Question: are NOS tubes different from 5751's, or can a tube be both?

Nos refers to when it was made so to speak. It was possibly made in the 60's or 70's and just now sold at a premium. The 5751 is the type of tube which describes how it reacts when it circuit. So yes I suppose you can get a nos 5751. Visit thetubestore.com and they do a very good job on describing the tubes and their attributes.

Highly recommend RCA 5751. Still available at a reasonable price from several reliable vendors. I like HI Test Guitars. Plenty of selection and great to deal with.

The JJ 5751 is not a 12AX7, different structure entirely. Short plates like a 12AT7.

The JAN 5751's at KCA work fine for phase inverters, although I have used them in v1 in the past with good results...the most recent one I purchased didnt sound all that good in v1, must be from a different batch.

It was whatever NOS 5751 they had at the shop here. But the Ghia is sounding so amazing right now. I WAS NOT picky with the tubes and she sounds so good. It's really great having an amp so responsive to each kind of input/output...tube,speaker,guitar,cable....I love my Z and my Z loves me.
