Before I bought my new American Deluxe Fender telecaster , I read hundreds of reviews on Alder vs Ash , rosewood / maple , etc.... I decided to set the record straight for those ; like myself , who want to know which is better and why. Lol I bought an Alder tele a few weeks ago. First tele ever for me. I thought it was a little tinny , but , not knowing tele's , thought it s the way it is. The bridge pickup produced some pretty heavy distortion too. Beautiful faded cherry finish. Stunning. Then, ........ I played an American Deluxe ASH telecaster. Wow. What a frickin difference. Same noiseless pickups , much different sound. Going back to the alder body tele was BAD. Thin. Yuk. Super clean with the ASH was full , clear , articulate , deep , sparkling highs. Heavy distortion with the bridge was , thick , clear ,awesomeness ! ( I can't believe spell-check didn't mind awesomeness ) - twice. What an amazing discovery. I wouldn't believe it , had I not experienced it. ---all with maple necks BTW. Butterscotch blond. Love it.

I hear alder is the chicken of woods. I wonder what that makes ash? Steak?

I owned three Tele's over the years before I found "the" one that worked for me. Ash body + maple v neck. Sounds just like you described.

I bought the highwayone series teles,alder-highway 1,ash texas tele.I have modified them with the usuall.
I do like both...the hw-1 does seem 70's ish like there marketing claim...I enjoy it...although I wish they still made that texas ash tele...it was one of the best buys in a tele (imho)...I was new to the tele after playing strat and les pauls, ect for so many years...before I stated bonding with/tele they discontinued it.Would have liked the two/tone/maple too.

Glad to hear more people with the same experience. It was so amazing , I was compelled to write about it. I've got 4 les Paul's , 2 strats , a Charvel , and now this ash tele. I don't think my other guitars are going to see much action for a while. This thing does it all !

I agree. I have an Ash american standard tele and an american deluxe stratocaster v-neck (with fralin real 54s) (both maple necks). The ash telecaster is noticably brighter, clearer, and louder. I've suspected that it is the ash body. My dream would be my current strat setup with an ash body instead. For some reason they don't make the american deluxe v-neck in ash, even though it's supposed to be the "50s esque/vintage flavored" deluxe strat. The Fralin pickups and titanium bridge saddles help get the strat closer to the tele. Alder is definitely darker in tone in my experience, but wood varies.

Can't say about maple ? I built 2 guitars from parts. I will NEVER do that again. Made me appreciate a well built guitar though !
Can't wait to get my maz 18 NR in a couple days to put this tele through. Super excited. Never played one before. I think this tele needs this amp. Guessing

Just finished a 3 hour assault on the new telecaster. Another note about this guitar...... I can go from nasty heavy distortion to clean and sparkly ( on bridge pickup ) with a simple roll of the volume...... And the clean sounds good.
I know I must sound like a kid , but I've been playing for over 25 years on some pretty nice gear , and I can't believe how good this thing sounds. For the record , it's an American Deluxe Ash Telecaster.
It seems to stay in tune very well. A few of my Les Paul's seem to constantly go out of tune and it annoying as he//.

Don't know why but I've always preferred alder for Strats and ash for Teles. My walnut Tele doesn't count because it has 2 humbuckers and has a totally different vibe.

The alder body tele I returned had the nicest maple neck ever. I wanted to keep that flawless beauty so bad it's crazy. I liked the binding , the chrome Fender logo on the headstock , everything. But , after hearing the clean AND distorted sounds I got through the ash tele , that baby had to go. I knew I'd never play it again.
It was a sad parting , but the sound of the ash tele made all the pain go away. I never in my life thought I could get the best distortion sound I could ask for from a single coil in the bridge of a telecaster. - but I am. Not to mention the obvious awesome sounds all the way to clean. ( did I mention my Maz18 NR comes UPS tomorrow ? ). Don't tell my wife. She will find out when the UPS truck backs in the driveway tomorrow. Eek. Shhhh. Lol.
