I am looking for a dynamic mic to use for live gigs. I have been using a Shure SM57 for a while now and it works fine. I recently saw the Sennheiser E906 and it looks to be a better sounding mic based on what I read.
One of the advantages of the Sennheiser is I can hang it over my cabinet and I don't have to worry about a stand.
Before I drop some cash on the Sennheiser, does anyone think I would make a difference by switching mics? Is the SM57 good? Any other brands that I should look at?

Yeah.. Those are great mics... you can get used ones for a good price. The "silver" are also a good deal with the same cap inside... less the "contour switches" The ONLY drawback I can think of is that if you don't hang them and prefer a mic stand, it requires a different smaller clip and will fall out of normal clips.

My "go to" mic for guitar amps for years (actually decades) was a SM57 or SM58. They have a built-in presence peak so they cut through in the mix better than most mics. You may or may not like that though. They were designed back when most mic mixers had more limited EQ than is typical today.
However, for the last two years I have been using a Sennheiser e906 and I much prefer it. It sounds more natural and seems to be more forgiving in it's placement in front of the speaker. It's a little pricey compared to the SM57. I've used the e609 also and I like it too. It doesn't have the filter switch so its a little cheaper.

I use both the SM57 and e609 together. they compliment each other pretty well. Can't say I noticed a appreciable difference between the 609 and 906 to justify the price difference. YMMV of course. Use one of these for the 57's: www.audixusa.com/docs_12/units/CabGrabber.shtml

I also use the SM57 and e906 together. The e609 drapes over the cab and is set about midway on the cone. I set the SM57 s couple of inches off the center of the cone and a few inches off the grill. A little less of the 57 goes into the main mix. I tend to like a nice blend in my in-ears or wedge. If I'm only using one mic I usually go with the e609. Not for any sonic difference. It just saves setting up another mic stand.
