since i put z talk on my feed a few weeks ago i've been searching like crazy through it for answers to all kinds of questions i have had on the rxjr. the first was about trying to maintain a clean headroom and go right into full overdrive without screwing around with the knobs and cables. i tried a lot of different pedals suggested on this forum and settled for a time on the HE Descend pedal. but damn it's not the same as a pure Dr Z clean. i'm not going for country crystal just a gritless clean.
someone mentioned on a post that i can not seem to dig up right now, but i think it was doctorice, who suggested the boss fs-6 for hi/lo input switching on the rxjr. the next day i got the fs-5l one switch version of it and set it up with the overdose switch and the pigtronix class a boost. it's something about having, literally, seven different gain options immediately on tap that has me freaking amazed at just how versatile z makes these amps. my cleans are pretty much right where i want them. it's just the volume drop that screws me up. but now i can boost that clean by switching over to the hi input and taming it with the clean boost set below unity or the lo input with the clean boost set at unity.
i am so dialing this rig in and feels awesome to have that kind of control with a one channel amp and a couple of foot switches and a boost. initially my instinct was to buy more pedals and manipulate the amp in a way to make it conform to what i wanted it to sound like. that was a mistake. with this amp all the variations of cleans and dirt is right there already. you just need to figure out how to access those sounds without taking your hands off the guitar.
