Just wondering if anyone has used a boost pedal to clean up your sound. I run my RXJR with the tone stack and volume dimed and the amp's boost on- just the perfect sound and feel for a lot of the stuff I do, which is why I don't use dirt pedals. I've always used the guitar's volume knob it to clean it up for, well, clean stuff. But obviously you get a big drop in volume with that and you have to tweak it just right so it doesn't break up too much.
I've heard you can use certain clean boost pedals set below unity to achieve the same result but somehow it sounds better and louder than using the guitar. It doesn't make sense to me since you're still dropping the input signal. Curious as to whether or not anyone else has messed around with this.

Regularly.... A Zoom Power Drive(clean boost ~ it has a gain knob, but mine is ALways @ zero) is first in my chain. Almost always set below unity on the volume.
It works because when your pups are WFO, the pedal is getting the full whallop of the guitar signal, the amp is getting "that" sound, only at a lower volume. You can also turn the wick up on the amp a little, and get away w/it.

thanks t-rock. i'm definitely going to check that out. the volume pot on my trem pedal doesn't cut the volume so i'll need a boost. or one of these www.heavyelectronics.com/DE/DE.html did some web searching and found that on the pgs site. probably buy the boost and that and see what works better and do a return. btw, what is turn the wick up on the amp a little. not familiar with wick.

I occasionally use my Flying Dragon this way. The pedal is at unity when the knob is at noon, so you have plenty of okay in either direction. I've used it to tame an Rx Jr, actually.

If i want a cleaner sound in my rock band. I tend to put my DGT in single coil and then add my ep boost with very little dialed in to just bring the vlume back up. Seems to do the job.

i borrowed a clean boost pedal last night. 20 db of un-eq'd signal. cleans up better than just the guitar volume. unity seems to be at 10:00. set at 9 still has fair amount of drop but the highs come through better. the descend pedal should arrive tomorrow. anxious to see how that works.

Draconis! Give option of attenuated gozinta or gozoutta. Fun to play with and sounds great!

after a 14 hour work day finally got home and snagged my HE Descend pedal and set it up second in line after the tuner. i then put it third in line after the boost pedal (pigtronix class a). works better before boost. has a very wide range of tonal options owing to the variable filter knob. all the way from wide open off to pure mud and ending at full treble tin. BUT it interacts with the RXJR boost totally differently than the pig boost. plus using it with both boosts on makes dialing it in even more complex.
bottom line, Descend on high setting 6 with filter at 12, pig boost at 12 and RXJR boost off, tele in high input= good to go. i haven't messed with the eq on the amp- still have everything dimed but may try that tomorrow. greatest thing about this pedal is it finds your clean sound but it doesn't wipe out your level. almost as loud playing everything wide open as playing through Descend. i think i have a credible clean channel. needs some more tweaking especially on the neck p/u though- feels muddy. middle position is bright and spanky.
