I just picked up a used anniversary edition Mini Z head and am flummoxed over what speaker/cab arrangement to get. I know it will be an Avatar Vingage open back cab regardless...
The Mini & Cab will be used for home practice, recording, and occasional patio jamming. (I also have a Blackstar HT-1R for quiet hours)
I am tore between a single 12 or two 10's The single 12 would be either a Celestion Gold or Eminence Canis Major The 2x10 would be either EMI Lil Buddy & Copperhead OR Celestion Greenback & Alnico Gold.
Both the Celestion Gold and Canis are Alnico at ~100-101 db SPL The Buddy/Copperhead are ~98 db SPL The Alnico Gold 10 is 100 db and the Greenback is 95 db SPL (too much of a spread?)
I've heard enough clips of the various speakers mentioned, though usually on their own, and not always thru a mini...so I am curious as to what "sound" I would get with two different speakers?
I am leaning toward the 2x10" (even though youtube clips of the Mini Z thru an Avatar 2x12 with Greenbacks sounds amazing!) as Avatar offers a staggered mount which comes in the same cab size as the single 12
The other question is loudness. I assume more sensitive speakers will give me a little more cleanish volume to play with? What I don't quite understand is what the "difference" is in pushing two 10" 99 db speakers (parallel wired) vs. a single 12 of roughly the same sensitivity? The two tens will have greater cone surface area vs a single twelve and if the sensitivities are roughly equal the tens will move more air but produce less SPL for a given volume setting (vs. the single twelve) as half the power is being consumed by each speaker.... better sound dispersion but lower volume???
I'm ready to PUNT!!!

I had one of the dr. Z 210's with my mini z. It sounded wonderful. I had it described to me as a bit more bass but tighter than a 115 or 112 cab. Does that make sense?

I recently picked up an Avatar 2X10 with a Gold and Greenback as stock. GREAT sounding cab, and at 8 ohms, goes with just about anything. I've since swapped out the Greenback for a Vintage 10, and am liking it even more. To me, two 10's (vs. one 12) sounds bigger and tightens up the low end nicely. Not so mid-heavy too. My 2 cents anyway...

Haven't tried the Canis or Lil Buddy however I have some experience with the others as well as the Mini-Z.
I do not believe the Copperhead is a good fit for the Mini as it is pretty bright and less prone to break-up.
There is 5dB between the Gold & the Greenback which is pretty significant making it less likely to hear the goodies the Greenback will give up. A pair of 10 incher's would be good but a 1x12 G12M would be pretty sweet.
I'm sure the Gold will sound pretty good but at 100dB its going to be a bit on the loud side.
Now the Greenback? I think that's the ticket. It compliments the amp very nicely, will more readily give up the goods and help keep your sound levels down.
Just one fella's opinion...

Well, I pulled the trigger and went in a totally different direction ordering an Avatar G112 Vintage cab with a Celestion G12-50GL Lynchback.
With the Strat and Fat '50s into the Mini Mr Scary Combo the speaker response is quite smooth through out the frequency range with a little bite at the top but nothing objectionable.
I was playing with zero attenuation and twiddling the amp from quarter to half volume with the guit vol at 5. Roll the guit volume up and yeah, even at 97 db, it can get loudish.
Busted out the TC Dark Matter distortion pedal and.... SWEET FEATHERY JESUS!!!
Going Fuzz shopping sometime next week.
Looking at a ZVEX Fat Fuzz Factory and Catalinbread Octapussy

Wish I could be of some help, but mine has only been played through a closed 112 with a WGS V30. I like it enough that I haven't been looking for other options for this cab (but I do want another cab in addition to this one....)
