You guys had some good suggestions for the computer I'm picking up so maybe you can help me out again. I'm looking to set up a decent home studio using Logic Pro 9 as my DAW. I'll mainly be recording vocals, guitar & bass amps, acoustic guitars, and a small-ish drum set (fully mic'd).
Could you guys suggest some mics and maybe a few interfaces to accomplish this?
Maybe mics that can be used for multiple purposes like a SM57 for amps and the snare or something. Also, I already have my midi/synth setup, so no need to include that in the interface. I'm hoping to keep this stuff under a grand combined, so I'm already leaning towards used gear.
If you need any other info please let me know. Thanks for the help!

There is a Recording/Sound etc section in Audio/Video.
An interface and how many mics? How many things are you going to attempt to record at the same time? (matters for the interface)

Sorry about not posting there, I checked it out and it seemed really dead. If a someone can move this please feel free. Anyways, for the drum set I'd probably need at least 6 to mic most of the kit.

Tough to get six good mics and a decent interface for under a grand.

I bought a Scarlett 18i6 a while back and have been very happy with it. The other Scarlett interfaces in the lineup get great reviews. There are some new ones to the lineup check them out.

What you could do is get a focusrite saffire pro 40 interface, 3 sm57s, a match pair of small diaphragm condensers, a beta 52a or an audix d6, and a good large diaphragm condenser for vocals or guitar. Shure makes good dynamic and condenser mics. So does akg. I recommend the akg perception series. I have the p220 and use it for vocals, acoustic guitar, and my electric guitar amps. The saffire pro 50 has 8 analog mic/line inputs and also has light pipe out so that you can add an Octopre (8mic/line inputs) or something similar to add more inputs. Everything here will easily accommodate a full drumset, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, and any other acoustic instruments you need recorded. It's a great place to start The interface is $500, sm57s are $100 each, beta52a is $190, match pair of condensers can range from $200-$500+ depending on what you get. The akg perception 220 is 180. Plus you have to factor in cable, stands, decent monitors, headphones.... Etc. If you buy a lot of this stuff used you can score deals and meet the $1,000 budget. Just look hard and read up. Sound on sound and sweetwater are great resources. Pm me with any questions you might have about any of this gear or other gear you are interested in. I do have a good amount of knowledge from working in audio and studying it as well.

Thanks for the tips guys. Also, thank you Lefty for moving this thread and sorry about tramping in the Discussion Forum!
I was checking out the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 a little while ago as it seemed like a decent one for the price. Being in college right now I can't shell out several grand for an interface so I'll definitely research that one a little bit more.
As for the mics, I've figured that I'd be picking up several sm57's and 3 sounds like a good number, but I've heard of their being a problem with counterfeit ones out there. I'll probably just read up a bit more on the issue to play it safe.
I'll definitely get back to this thread with any future questions, updates on what I pick up, and future recordings!

So I've been following lilcm101's suggestions to a 'T' so far. I've ordered a fosrite saffire pro 40, 3 shure sm57's, a beta 52a, and even the akg p220. What would you guys recommend for a pair of small diaphragm condensers?
Thanks, Harrison

And you can also check out the MXL 993 stereo pair. They are only $250 vs the rode's at $430. Depends on the amount you have left to spend as well. Good luck!

Looks like the nt-5's are going for a bit over two bills used on eBay. Thanks for the advice again guys, I'll look into all of your suggestions.
As for cables, I'm picking up seven 20' Peavey xlr cables from a guy off of Craigslist for a decent price. I'm also picking up two mic stands with booms and one kick stand from the same guy. I still need to look into getting several other stands, but that shouldn't be to hard.
Thanks for the help!
