Ok, here's the deal...
I want a 1x12 open back cab with a Celestion Gold to run with my SRZ. I really want a Z cab with the SRZ weave, but if you count the upcharge for the Gold it's expensive for a one speaker cab. What alternatives can y'all suggest?

How about an Avatar cab? You don't have to buy it loaded with a speaker (though he has good speaker prices).
I also looked at the Tone Tools, but they are way mucho pricey.

Celestion golds just like the blues are way over the top price wise. I haven't heard one yet but I'm sure your going to get lots of people saying that a weber alnico blue in 50 watts with no dope might do the trick and save you about half the price if you shop around.

Yeah, they are expensive, but I have yet to play anything else that is quite like them. If that tone is what you crave, you won't get it exactly with a Weber. I've tried...

Well I have to admit that, the blues are truely a unique speaker, a fully cranked vinatge ac30 with a pair of those is like heaven to the ears. Just bloody expensive,I do admit though that the weber's blue is a little darker and my red fang falls short on capturing those british mids that the celestions are famous for so point taken. Just went to the TRUETONE website. His stuff is awesome, solid pinne cabs with your choice of tolex, grillcloth etc....all at very reaonable prices. They are gorgeous!

I believe Myles said the SRZ would do 65 watts for 50 watt speaker owners beware!

I believe Myles said the SRZ would do 65 watts for 50 watt speaker owners beware! That's why I'm having such a hard time deciding how to go on speakers for my SRZ... I want a 1x12, but then it could theoretically blow up if I dumped full power into it - but man that would be way loud! Not sure I could ever get that much juice in without turning into jelly.

If you want a 1x12, give the Texas Heat a try (see my post in the 6545 section). It can handle 150w.

Heres another option Skydog,
Eminence "governor" or "stonehenge" models. Both are rated at 75 watts and have that classic raw British sound according to their website. I have 2 Eminence speakers and they are a very good option especially if you don't want to shell out big bucks but still want a great sound. Both of those will set you back just under $90 plus shipping. Go check them out, they are listed in a store on Ebay. It could be a cheaper option for you.

Looked at J Designs. A 1x15 cab with oval hole in the back and blonde would be about $300 empty. When that Evan amp becomes available I might have to get one of these to put one of my D130s in for some jazzy Vibroverb tones!

I don't think I'll ever crank it fully...Myles said the SRZ with a Mullard tube rec can push 72 watts FWIW. I can barely play my 45 at half volume! And that's 60ish watts running into two 30 watt speakers. I don't think I'll ever kill it. If I do want to dime it I have an Airbrake handy.

I listened to the sound clip there, and it is way far away from the sound in my head. That custom speaker they are discussing there is a 30 watt ceramic - couldn't be further from a 50 watt alnico if it tried. Of course, everyone is seeking something different, and speakers make such a HUGE difference in tone that I would expect that no one would be looking for exactly the same speaker as I am. YMMV!
