I have never really experimented with speakers before, but I have been researching and seem to be narrowing down to the same options as so many others. I have been playing my Maz Sr 112(G12H30) exclusively for almost three years and I love the tones I get out of it, but I just can't help wanting to get that extra 1%. ;D. The options I am most interested in are Celestion Alnico Blues, Weber blue and silver, and tonetubbies. I'm planning on buying a 212 (most likely from Avatar), and loading it with some combination. I haven't decided that it has to be two different speakers but I am leaning that way. What I'm looking for is a richer sound with more harmonics. This is so hard to describe but I want more of that warm but jangly sound like is showing up on a lot of country records lately. The catch is I need my leads to be warm and thick. I know I probably want the impossible. That's what I am shooting for though. Do I have any business considering the blues ? Is the 38 watts of the Sr too much power for the blues even if I use two? My understanding is a cabs power handling is equal to twice the power of the lowest power speaker in the pair. Which would give me 30 watts total for 2 blues. Which tells me that it would not be enough for the Maz, but the G12h30 in my amp is only 30 watts so I'm not sure. If I used a 40 watt Tone Tubby or a 30 watt webber Blue in combination with the celestion Blue would the cab still be rated at 30 watts? I have been thinking that a TT original H1 hemp cone(darker sounding) mixed with a celestion blue(brighter/bag o"glass sounding) could be awesome sounding. Has anyone tried this? I also thought maybe a blue mixed with a bluedog might be great idea too because they seem to be similar but have slightly different personalities. All of these descriptions are from what I have heard on the forum as I have not yet used any of them so any help from any of the experienced speaker swappers out there would be greatly appreciated. Also I am expecting to go with an open back cab for this application. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this also. Hopefully this isn't to many questions for one thread. Thanks in advance!

ctone, I feel your need man.... but what your looking for is very possible, " I haven't decided that it has to be two different speakers but I am leaning that way. What I'm looking for is a richer sound with more harmonics. This is so hard to describe but I want more of that warm but jangly sound like is showing up on a lot of country records lately. The catch is I need my leads to be warm and thick. I know I probably want the impossible." I don't think you can get a better speaker for the Maz Sr than a Weber Alnico Blue dog, period... that single speaker in a 1x12 already has everything you just described you would like out of a speaker all by itself... ( I like the 50 watt version for a little more headroom BUT two 30 watt bluedogs together with a Maz Sr is magic too... thats actually what I have right now in my Z-best) Also, the Weber Silver Bell sounds incredible by itself as a 1x12 with the Maz Sr and is a little thicker in the mids, and covers/ enhances a slightly different tonal frequency... is very nice paired With a Bluedog for a two speaker set-up with a Maz SR ( or most DR Z's for that matter)... another option is a ceramic Bluedog ( or G12 H30 also sounds nice paired with) and an Alnico Bluedog to get a little more snappy/ tight sound with the compressed Alnico sound also... " If I used a 40 watt Tone Tubby or a 30 watt webber Blue in combination with the celestion Blue would the cab still be rated at 30 watts?" answer is YES. 30 watts total.... The blues sound wonderful too, little more glassy sounding and if thats what your going for nother else will quite get it, I think you could use them ( i've tried my 2x12 blues cab with mine) but I wouldn't ever really crank it cause that Maz SR is way more than the 38 watts it's rated.... just have to be careful or maybe look at the new 50 watt Celestion Golds that could handle the Maz... might be perfect if you want that Celestion blue sound... and the MAZ as with most DR Z's likes ALOT of different speakers... but in the end all you can do is kinda use some of our advise and narrow it down a bit then just try them for yourself... who knows, tone tubbies or a tonker may do it for you? best thing to do is just try them... But I'd personally recommend startin the swapping with a Weber alnico blue dog... great speaker with the Maz Sr. hope this helps some, maybe some others will chime in and give you some ideas... but let us know which ones you try and what you end up liking... my problem is I really like a few different speaker setups and cabs a have a hard time deciding which one I like better... It sounds like the weber bludog is going to be first try then. It's exciting that it is an easy swap to just one speaker in my amp. So I can get stared right away without spending the money on a cabinet yet. If that works for me like it does for you, then I could use the 212 cab for another sound. Maybe 1 alnico 1 ceramic in a closed back for a bigger more powerful more rock sound while retaining that chime and detail I'm looking to enhance.(So many attractive options.) This probably sounds like it's coming out of left field , but just curious has anyone ever tried 2 greenbacks(G12m) or 1 greenback and 1 something else espcialy with sr or jr? I used to have one in budda Twinmaster plus that I really liked some aspects of. It had some shortcomings in that situation, but I think 2 of them would alleviate those shotcomings. I was thinking those in a closed back 212 could sound really cool with the maz for a little more old school rock tone. Thats not on my plate right now though, I'm much more interested in the alnico path right now. I would just appreciate any input as I am hoping to slowly amass several of these speakers so I can further tweak my sound to each application(style of music, number of pieces in band, venue etc.) Also Jason do you have the back on your Z best with those 30 watt bluedogs in it? I seem to have run into a lot of places where people are saying they don't like alnicos in closed back as much. The guy from tonetubby said in an interview that a closed back cab did not do the TT alnicos justice. I realize this could just be those alnicos. Just an impression I seemed to be getting from looking around. I would love for this not to be the case though, so please let me know

ctone,
I think you’ll like that Weber 50 watt Alnico blue dog in your 1x12 Maz SR… when I use my Maz SR at Practice with a 1x12 it is with that speaker and sounds great… I’d get it with light dope… and you might wanna think about getting that blue dog in an Ohm rating that will match the other speakers your gonna get for your 2x12 so you can do some swapping with it later… just a thought, since you can use a 16 ohm speaker with the Maz SR… and you could add that 2x12 for a bigger gig or even an extra single 12” cab…
And, Yes I do have the back on that Z-best…. Alnicos sound awesome in it… those two 30 watt alnico blue dogs sound as good if not better than anything else I ever tried in it… and before that I had them in an older big closed back fender 2x12 cab (with the 12” speakers offset and not side by side) that is about the size of an Avatar cab and it they were amazing with the Maz SR in that cab too… could be the tone tubbies or maybe just the cab needs to be kind of big??…
the Z-best has that port so that you get a whole lot more bass out of an Alnico and it sounds HUGE! I really can’t use it as much cause it’s so loud and in your face with those speakers but sounds great… you can’t get a bad sound out of a Z-best unless you blow a speaker… I used a G12- H30 paired with a 50 watt Alnico Silver bell in mine for a long time before I switched to the 2 Bluedogs…
I also think two greenbacks would sound very nice in the Z-best… and I have tried 2 greenies in a Z open back 2x12 cab I just got from Curt here on the forum with the my Maz SR, Stingray, and both Prescriptions… and I must say… I’m not a big green back fan, but they sounded REALLY good with all these amps… I was surprised at how NICE they sounded with the Stingray! They were nice with the Maz SR and I think in a closed back you would get exactly the sound your thinking you’d get… might sound awesome in a Z-best, knock the volume down a bit and I might have to try them in there…
I also used a Greenback paired with a V30 Celestion in a 2x12 Maz Jr for a long time before I got rid of her, sweet amp but not enough clean headroom with it… not a big fan of either of those speakers, but they sounded nice together with that amp.
I think your on the right track ctone… and I think your in for a treat with that Weber… can't wait to hear what you think.
if I had to get rid of all my amps and just have one... I think a Maz Sr with a Weber 50 watt Blue would work for me!

Jason, Can you explain what you mean by matching the impedence to the speakers I plan on using in the 212? I was planning on all 8 0hm speakers.

I can't use more than 1 speaker tap at a time can I? How would I use the speaker in the amp and an external speaker cab at the same time? What would the impedences have to be?

Jason, Can you explain what you mean by matching the impedence to the speakers I plan on using in the 212? I was planning on all 8 0hm speakers. well if you have all your speakers @ 8 ohm that would work so you could switch any of them around any which way you want… the 2x12 cab would be 4 Ohms with the two 8 Ohm speakers in parallel ( and 16 Ohm if you run them in series) and the 1x12 cab would be 8 Ohm with the single twelve… so ALL the individual speakers being the the same Ohm load would be perfect for swapping speakers around, or even running another 1x12 extension cab with the Maz 1x12 BUT… NOT for running the 1x12 Maz Sr with an extension 2x12 cab… for that you will need some mismatched speakers as I will describe below… I can't use more than 1 speaker tap at a time can I? No, in the Z amps you can use only one of them at a time, and in your Maz Sr you have your choice of 4, 8, or 16 Ohm outs.. How would I use the speaker in the amp and an external speaker cab at the same time? What would the impedences have to be? To use the internal speaker and an external cab you would need a Y cord or adapter… and it wouldn’t work with all your speakers being 8 Ohm if you want to run the internal and an extension 2x12… the speakers in the 2x12 would both need to be 16 Ohm run in parallel so the 2x12 cab would be 8 Ohm… and the single Internal speaker in the Maz Sr would then also need to be 8 Ohm… you would plug the Y cable into the 4 ohm tap and then you could run from the Y cable to both the internal 8 Ohm speaker and the 8 Ohm ext 2x12 cab at the same time… using the 4 Ohm out. ( you could also run two 8 ohm speakers in series in a 2x12 for a 16 ohm load… then put a single 16 ohm speaker in the Maz… then you could use the Y cord plugged into the 8 ohm out and run both the internal 16 Ohm speaker and the 16 Ohm 2x12 ext cab that way)
