Well, where do I begin? I've owned for quite a number of years, like maybe 25, and old Marshall JTM 45 Mark II head with Plexi front and cream back panel, ca. 1966 I believe. It's a great sounding amp but I've probably only played through it for a few hours in all these years because it's so flipping loud. And maybe because many years ago it blew up on me while I played it - an easy fix, one of the big filter caps had exploded, but possibly I was subconsciously spooked on playing it, despite my general philosophy of no worries, man, if you have these old amps, play 'em hard cause that's what they are for. But for whatever reason, I have hardly used this thing.
Now, several years ago I "discovered" Dr. Z amps and the wonders of his power Brakes and have acquired quite a few of these brakes and use them on all my Dr. Z heads and have installed a couple in vintage amps to make them more usable - notably an AC30 and an old tweed Pro, to wondrous effect, making these amps a joy to play at reasonable room volumes while still driving 'em hard to get that ol' tube nazz!
Now for some reason, I hadn't done that with this old Marshall head until about 4 weeks ago - IDIOT!!!, only to discover that this amp with an Air Brake is a glorious sounding toney delight which has a sound like no other amp I own and has a creamy smooth distortion that doesn't even sound like distortion, and when I plug into it I can hardly stop playing it cause it sounds so friggin' good at a very nice room volume.
And here's the weird thang: I've not been on the forum hardly at all these last 6 months or more, spending my time working at work and working on several musical projects, until just about 2 weeks ago when lo and behold I check back in here with you guys only to find this new Antidote amp is ready to go, and it is based to some extent on an old Marshall design and this is precisely the "new" sound I've rediscovered. Twilight zone theme song right here now, because it gets me to thinking how much I might need one of these Z Antidotes to see if it sounds like this old Plexi head I have and I can carry it all over tarnation and play it without worrying it's gonna blow up on me and still get a sound similar to the Marshall.
What's the karmic implication that I rediscover this sound just as Doc's amp becomes available? Seems like it was meant to be. So I order one and it's supposed to arrive next Tues, nigh 4 days from now.
So, I'll let you know.

coincidence? i think not. karma, i think.
