So... the Z-Best cab has been bothering me because it's sooooo directional. I tried some homade beam blockers (aluminum strip with half a tennis ball in the middle) but it only seemed to darken it and didn't really spread the sound around. So I was thinking about truning the Z-Best into an open back cabinet. I would just build a new back that would cover about half the back and mount the jack on that. Will this sound like utter crap due to the cab's tuning? Does this sound like a good idea or is it one of my usual half-baked ones?
Thanks for the help in advance!!

If I could I would but I can't so.... well I can't. Money is at a premium right now. I was thinking this would hold me over. Just to clarify... I'd be buying a new piece of wood to make the new back out of... I'd leave the original back alone so I can switch back when I get a true open back 2x12.

It's ported on the front right? That may affect the way it sounds with an open back. Try it, you're only out a piece of plywood and some time.

Yep... front ported. I guess if it sounded really weird I could always fill the ports with something to block them. Something removable of course.

Try it, you're only out a piece of plywood and some time. ummm, I'm with billy on this BUT if you turn the Z-best like it's supposed to be ( on it's side with speakers in top/ bottom position) that port is actually running down the side of the front, top to bottom... so the open port on the back should be running down the OPPOSITE side on the back also top to bottom.... opposite side because I think the front port does not go ALL the way to the back of the cab on the inside to redirect the BASS from the rear inside of the cab out through the front of the port... OR maybe you can experiment with a couple of backs... maybe try one on the back that is smaller, more OVAL shaped and more toward the center ( but not directly in the center, maybe just OFF center on the opposite side from the port on the front)?? If you do it... ( I WOULD try it) let us know how it works and if you like it...
