Hey you guys! Long time no write down any bull here. Good to be back.
What's with this comparing the Antidote to the Route 66 and blackface Bassman business? If the Antidote is supposed to be Doc's take on the JTM45, then I wanna hear how it compares to the Remedy (maybe my favorite amp of this lifetime), and a '59 Bassman (tweed), which I thought Marshall and Ken Bran used as the basic design to springboard their amp from. And why is Doc making an amp based on the JTM45 when I thought he Remedy was based on the "Plexi", which is a JTM45? He already did that! What up with that, Doc?
What does the Antidote do, save getting louder and running on different tubes, that the Remedy doesn't do? Gotta admit, I love the presence knob. Always love a presence control. But will this thing fuzz up and get all nazzy like the Rem do? What's the skinny? Inquiring minds wanna know?
Lastly, I'm fearful of 45 watts! I play the dang Rem on half power all the time, with an Air Brake! 45 watts must be deafening! Can't imagine using this amp without heavy braking.
Confusion reigns.

Hey JJ, Welcome back - and with a whole bunch of questions!!! Being a HUGE Remedy fan myself, I'll be interested to hear the enlightened views on this one too (45 Z Watts is WAY to much amp for me and my humble needs too, but a new Z always gets my attention!)

Not quite - he is comparing the Route 66 and the Antidote. JJ and I are looking for a Remedy and Antidote comparison - but I guess we could extrapolate from this one. Although this comparison focusses on the Fender style differences - Remedy is not Fender like, so it sort of breaks down a bit.

Yeah, not really very clear to me. And I don't wanna sound argumentative here, but.......
In that thread Brent@Guitar Riot says "it's a blend of Blonde Bassman(!) and vintage Marshall" - what the .....? Seems like its supposed to be JTM 45-like, not later Bassman-like - blonde or blackface. If any comparison is made to a Bassman, seems like it'd be to a '59 tweed. Nobody's making that comparison. And then Brent says "Like Dr Z’s Z Wreck is to an AC30 so the Antidote is to the JTM45". Well ........ I thought that's what the Remedy was - an amp like a Plexi JTM 45! So what's the Antidote do that the Remedy doesn't do?
Then Doc's reply lumps the Antidote in with a Blackface Deluxe ... Ahhhh confusion! I think he's saying that, like the BF Deluxe there is lots of tonal control, the Antidote has lots of tonal control. Well, it's just one more control than the Rem, albeit my fave - the presence control, but is it that much difference from the Rem? I'm guessing it is as the power tubes gotta make a difference, but ....... I need clarification!!!!!!!!

Hard to put this into words, as they say a " Demo is worth 1000 words", and a new David Holt and Dave Baker demo's are on the way. jj look up David Holt " Crossfire" video on You Tube, I believe there is a link here as well.
But my analogy was between the RT 66 and the Antidote, same trannies and same output tubes. Like theTweed Deluxe and Blackface Deluxe, same tubes 6V6 and same transformers in the TD and the BD, but much differant sounds in the two amps.
As for the Remedy vs Antidote, the Remedy is a tweaked up four 6V6 amp acting like a small metal panel 100 watt Marshall, and the Antidote started out as a JTM-45 design but ended up a differant incarnation.
Hows that more confused now, I hope not.

JTM45 is not the same as a Plexi (and neither is the route66).

..... or to put it another way, neither a Plexi nor a JTM45 quite sound like a Remedy, or an Antidote, but they're close.......

Ha! Thanks for responding Doc! With this discussion in mind, today I did a little side by side comparison of the Remedy and my (probably) 1966 Plexi (EL34's) and they were both Awesome, yet different, one not better than the other - just different. Of course, any two amps are different in my experience, even the same model! I have a couple tweed Deluxes, quite different from each other, a couple of tweed Bassmans, very different from each other. So any real side by side comparison is almost pointless. And like the good Doctor says, what starts as a JTM 45 design, with time and tweaks, ends up it's own thang in the end, different but great. And though I worry about 45 watts of loudness ...... For me to play my old Plexi, I gotta run it through an Air Brake, so I'm sure the same would go for an Antidote.
Sooooooo ..................................................... I guess I need one.
jj
and when my wife, who earlier in the day poo poo-ed the idea of yet another amp and just a minute ago asked "how much is that amp you're thinking about?", heard the price, she said "oh. that's not so bad". i take that as a big go-ahead. anybody hear it differently?
that's what i'm talkin' bout.

IMHO The Remedy gets more Duane Allman ( Live at the Fillmore) and the Dote' gets more Hi-Fi. That's my take after one night with the Antidote and years with Rem.
The Antidote is pure Magic. Sounds like all the best guitar players from the 60's on Vinyl, for REAL!!!
I have another amp brand that gets me my Allman sound but the Dote' is in a class all it's own. IMHO
