I'm looking at a speaker upgrade for my open back 2x12 cab (Bogner). I'm trying to decide between (1) Weber alnico silver and blue or (2) Tone tubbie alnico and ceramic. I play primarily blues, rock, jazz and funk. I like tones ranging from crystal clean to mid-level distortion (not metal). I'll be running a Ghia, Z28 and an el-84 based Fargen amp through this cab (at different times, obviously ). I've heard great things about both combinations but can only afford one. Any thoughts/expriences?

I've noticed that no one has responded yet. probably nobody has owned both kinds. I am a big fan of the alnico Tone Tubby but have never heard the silver/blue combination.

I've got both however I have not A/B'd them in the combination you are asking about. I should try that and see how it does. It would require speaker removal/installation and testing which could take a while.
I have combined the ceramic Tone Tubby with the alnico Silver Bell in a THD 2 x 12 3/4 closed back with great results. I have run the alnico Blue with a ceramic Tone Tubby again really good results from 1 x12 cabs in parallel. I am constantly changing things around as my wife says "...cause I don't have a life..." so little does she know ;D.
IMHO...I don't think you could lose with either combination. I think I would have a hard time landing on just one as being the only way to fly. I think you would be happy with either. The Tone Tubby guarantee of no ghosting and cone cry appealed to me. All the raving comments from fellow forum members about the Webers appealed to me too. Have you ever seen a donkey standing equal distance from two stacks of hay....the poor fellow will starve to death. That's what my father used to tell me, so hell I just bought-em all!
My father told me another story about two young bulls overlooking a heard of cows....but I won't go into that here cause that's off topic ;D.
That's my solution!

thanks for the input. I may take the dive into the Webers first, since that's a little cheaper than the Tubbies solution ... then maybe try the Tubbies later when i can swing it. now, about the two young bulls and that herd of cows ...

OK here we go. I did a limited experiment this PM with the 30 watt versions of the Weber Blue and Silver each in their own single 12 cab. Next I did the same thing with the 40 watt Tone Tubby's one alnico and the other ceramic each in their own single 12 cab. Now this could get complicated because it wasn't very scientific. First, the weber's were both in 1/2 open back Mesa Boogie cabs whereas the TT's were in the larger 3/4 closed back Mesa Boogie cabs. I have not exactly sorted all this out but here are the preliminary results, keep in mind this is very subjective. The clear winner were the Weber's, go figure. I was not happy with the initial tones using my Tom Anderson Tele so I switched to a PRS Swamp Ash with coil taped humbuckers. The PRS was sounding much better to me which is unusual. Probably needed to adjust the Maz 38 tone settings but did not. So for what it's worth that's my first cut at a test of the speakers. I was surprised and believe that further testing is in order. The young bull looking over the heard said to the older bull, "...I sure would like to get to know that cow over there with the spots a little better...". The older bull looks at the young bull and says, "why just the one with the spots, lets go down there and get to know all of them...". I edited the story just a little as there is now a female in this forum .

wow. thanks guitarstan - appreciate the effort. I think I'm gonna go for the Webers. Others on the forum seem very happy with them as well. Maybe I'll add the Tubbies later when/if i can swing it.
As for the old cow ... here's to the wisdom that age brings! ;D
