I've been laying scratch tracks this week with the singer/guitarist I play with. Mostly using EZDrummer for drums, we take one pass through recording guitars, and then one pass with me playing bass and him singing. The idea is to get a sketch of the songs down, and go back and record "real" takes of everything after.
We've been working from 8-10 each night, with my kid sleeping 2 floors above. So everything has been plugged in direct to the Presonus Firestudio, into Logic. Man, I'm really impressed with the amp/effect sims they have. I thought the ones in Garageband were completely hokey, and not realistic at all. We recorded a song last night that is usually Guitar>slightly overdriven AST>Tremolo. I picked a sim that was something like "Crunchy Trem Combo", and it was 90% of the way there. Really nice. Heck, even the fuzz stuff sounded great. No, it won't clean up with your volume knob, but for low-level recording/playing, these are pretty sweet!
Anyhow, not that we're going to be using these tracks, but for quick and dirty, it sounds great!

They are pretty cool. There's a company called Softube that really has some great sims. They don't have any effects but the sounds are really credible. Especially the bottom.
