I just got a Maz 18NR. It's killer and I love it. I play the majority of time upstairs while the rest of the family sleeps, so keeping things quiet is a must. I already know that the Brake Lite isn't going to = great tone at whisper volumes, but I would like a bit more break up while keeping the volume high and master low...preamp breakup is fine with me.
Right now, I run a Timmy pedal for slight edge on my clean tone, but I'd like to utilize the Timmy in a different way, so maybe a brake lite could add some edge on the cleans and allow me to run the gain higher on the Timmy. The other option is getting an AC Booster for a little more gain and keeping the Timmy where it is as a slight boost.
So, AC Booster or Brake Lite?

the BrakeLite will not go down to whisper volumes at all...even at full power reduction the MAZ18 will still be quite loud if you will not keep the MV very low. I doubt you will like the sound. The Airbrake will work better. A booster is a good idea for keeping a typical MAZ18 sound but you will need to turn down the MV again very much... You should judge by yourself...try both solutions if you can

If you are going to run the volume high and the master low, the Brake Lite doesn't really come into the equation. My experience with the Maz suggests that you need the master above noon to start hearing any power amp breakup at all, and it's much nicer around 2 o'clock. The Maz is quite loud at that point, even with a Brake Lite. If you don't mind preamp breakup, go ahead and turn the master down and drive the front end with a booster pedal. You can get quite nice tones that way, and keep the volume under control.
