My quest continues for the best 12 inch speaker for my z 1x12. I'll be running a z-28 , maz 38 and rt 66 head thru it....... I cannot decide between 30 or 50 W speaker? ?? The 3 that intrest me most are the Emi red fang, weber blue dog (30 or 50 W alnico) and the weber silver bell (30 or 50 ceramic). I guess the tonal attributes I am after are tight bottom end, chimey.......lively top end.....definately nothing dark sounding. The more sparkle, the better..... I am thinking 50 W for some more headroom....... any thoughts?

I personally wouldn't match a 30 watt speaker with my Route 66. Even though it's rated at 32 watts, you KNOW it can spike much higher. Probably the same with the Maz 38.
I'd go with the 50 watt. But I can't help you with your three choices. I have no experience with them. Hopefully someone else here can help.

I had the same dilemma...I ended up getting the Weber 50 watt Blue Dog (alnico).
From what I hear, I think it matches your criteria quite well. It's got plenty of sparkle, and there's no muddiness at all. The bottom end is not boomy (cab has some impact of course - I'm running an open back). A closed back would produce more bottom end.
I haven't tried the other two, so I shall abstain from offering any opinion on them...

I've got the 30w Alnico Silver Bell paired up with a G12h30 in my Z Best, and I love it. I'm running an RX ES though, which has quite a bit of power.
I'm having a 1x12 built for me right now by J Design Cabs, that should be here in a month. I plan on getting either a Blue Dog 50w Alnico or the Silver Bell 50w Alnico. The Silver Bell is definitely an awesome speaker, and currently my favorite.

I reckon the Celestian Gold would be worth a look too James.

I'm using a Weber 30 watt Alnico Blue Dog with my 66, Sounds really good but lacks a little top end IMO, it works but could use a touch more brightness, an EMI Texas heat sounds great with a 66 also.

The lack of brightness thing with the 66 is my main concern..........its already dark enough sounding. Wonder if the 50 watter Weber BD would have more brightness? Thats why I was thinking about the ceramic silver bell.......

I'd be careful with a Blue Dog alnico 50w. For my 'ray it's perfect, but...I sold Curt the Blue Dog alnico 30w he speaks of, which is lacking in top end sparkle with the dark voiced Rt 66. It was a bright speaker compared to the 50w version, originally owned by Steve (guitarman1) who also considered it very bright...SO...you'll probably be best off with a ceramic variety speaker. If you can deal with the cone cry, a Cele Vintage 30 would be my choice in a Rt 66.
I used a Vintage 30 with my old Z28 and it smoked, very loud & focused...strong bottom, a very authoritative speaker...and I 'think' a top choice of the doc. If the cone cry bothers you, an Emi Tonker is a good choice.

Thats why I was thinking about the ceramic silver bell....... I have two Weber Ceramic Blue Dogs in 50W here that I'm trying to figure out what to do with because once they broke in they lost about all the top end. They'd be great for an over-bright amp, but not with any of the amps I have here...

I am glad to hear this info regarding loss of top end ......It'll save me being unhappy with a speaker....Thanks!...........I am really leaning towards trying a couple of Emi's.........the Red White and Blues description is "top end sparkle" with medium break up speed..........120 watts. The Texas Heat and Tonker also sound cool..........maybe buy 'em all.......sell the ones I don't like. Such good value moneywise.

It is all I used for quite a while and I dug it with my old 66, Have not used it yet with the new one 'cause most of my gear is "Stored" at a band members house while I do this house project. James, as you know, I like the Texas Heat a bunch too. my Blue was bright, but it's been pummeled and now is quite mellow, Last gig I had the 66's treble nearly dimmed.

If you can try a Celestion Century (neodymium, 80 watts), it's a great speaker....highs, lows, and everything in between and it only weighs 4 lbs or so.
