Dog-gone it. I guess I'm going to go with an Eminence instead of a Celestion...price being a good portion of it.
I'll be using a Route 66 with Humbucker guitars and a closed back 1x12 cabinet. I'm looking for that 4x12 sound. The cabinet is only 11 inches deep, so it's not kicking out the bass. Not bad, though.
I'm looking at three Eminence speakers:
Governor: Supposed to be close to a Vintage 30
Private Jack: Supposed to be close to a Greenback
Wizard: Close to a g12h30 or as Eminence says: "Inbetween the Gov. & Private Jack"
Any votes? I'm leaning towards the Governor first, Private Jack second.

I use and dig v-30's in Dr Z 1x12 open back cabs, work great with Route 66 as well as Z/28, Ghia and MAZ Jr...so my Vote is the Gov.
Lot's of folks dig the Wizard.....and the Tonker and Swap Thang have loyal followers too...and they carry the big stick on the low end.

I love my Private Jack but with that bangin low end of the 66 you might be better off with a Wizard. If it were me with my constant GAS, I'd probably buy all 3. I'm trying to decide on which one to put in my Zbest with the Private Jack that's in there right now. The Ghia's on it's way and I'm not sure what kind of low end I'll need to look for... decisions....

What the heck, I just went and ordered a Vintage 30.
No matter what Eminence I purchase, I'll always be wondering what a Vintage 30 will sound like. When I see the difference is only $20....it's $20 for piece of mind.
But at least I'll be able to comment on the V-30 VS the Black Shadow MC-90 (Celestion g12m80)

Good choice IMO, lotZ of folks don't care for V-30's...but I dig them.

A lot of Z folks may not like them, but they're not really trying to get the 4x12 sound.

I prefer the Tonker in my 1x12 compared to a G12H, Greenback or V30. If you want a BIG, BOLD & LOUD sound with muy low end and little cone breakup, the Tonker is it IMHO. It has an open midrange and a little chime on the top end. Very balanced across the frequency range.
I don't even like Celestions anymore (excluding the Blue Alnico).

Actually, I don't want a BIG & LOUD sound. Bold yes, but not big and loud. I'm trying to keep the volume down. A 1x12 with a 32 watt Route 66 is still pushing the limits of the clubs I play. You've really got to run a 66 hot. It's not a versitile amp, and if you set it at anything other than it's sweet spot (which is basically full power), then tone suffers. Nothing like my MAZ Jr....really good sounds at most levels. Don't get me wrong, I love the 66, but you only get one setting...but it's a great setting.
I still have to use an attenuator...just a bit. And unfortunately, a closed back is very directional. So I've REALLY got to get the cabinet off the ground....at least 3 feet for me to really hear it. I may need a beam blocker.
(thanks for the advice though)
Tonker is a 102db speaker. Vintage 30 is 100db. So I get some reduction there. I see the Tonker is a 150 watt speaker...you bet there's not going to be any breakup!
And as for my 4x12 with greenbacks.....a greenback is only a 25 watt speaker. That's too low.

I picked texas Heats for my Z Best. Sounds amazing and I haven't thought about speakers for a while. I'm content. They sounded meaner than hell with my Route 66 and just as good with my Traynor.
They are rated at 150 watts a piece but they have a lower Db rating and are great for being able to turrn the amp up just a litttle more than you could with some other speakers.
